Pocket super scarf- an easy textured scarf pattern in 2 sizes

 

 

A lot of you loved my Penelope Shawl but I know a shawl is not for everyone. So I decided to design a chunky crochet pocket scarf.

 

A scarf with pockets is not just a fashion accessory but is very practical too. Can you imagine going out in the winter without one?

 

 

When we lived in Chicago, I would never step out without one. It was my protection against the chilly wind. 

 

I love jumbo scarves but I am petite and I will get swallowed in it. So, I decided to include 2 sizes. I want women of all sizes to enjoy wearing this crochet scarf.

 

 

 

When I first picked the Lion Brand Wool-Ease yarn to design this chunky crochet pocket scarf, I wasn’t very sure of the color. I had to buy this because it was the only color JoAnn’s had enough skeins of. 

 

 

Once I made the scarf, I must say I fell in love with this Driftwood color. It looks so classy! I think it would look great in other neutral colors like cream, gray, and beige too.

Materials

1. Super Bulky, size 6 yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in color Driftwood for the scarf pictured. 

2. An N/P(10mm) crochet hook.

3. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends

 

Finished Size

I have included 2 sizes to fit women. The average size scarf is smaller. You will still be able to wrap it around your neck, but it won’t look that jumbo.

 

The Jumbo size is the supersize scarf pictured. It will suit taller women or women who love volume.

 

Average: 70 inches long and 8 inches wide without the fringes. 

Jumbo: 86 inches long and 8 inches wide without the fringes. 

 

The fringe will add another 12 inches to the length of the scarf.

Yardage

Note: Lion Brand Wool-Ease generally comes in 106-yard skeins but I found this Driftwood color only had 87 yards in each skein. 

 

Average Scarf: 4 skeins of 87 yards each

Jumbo: 4-1/2 skeins of 87 yards each.

 

If you won’t be making the pockets, you can finish a jumbo scarf with just 4 skeins. 

 

Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern is written in US crochet terms.

ch- chain

hdc– half double crochet

sc- single crochet

BL– Back loop only

FL– front loop only

 

Stitch Explanations

 

1. Hdc in the Back Loop (hdc in BL): Insert your hook under the loop that is away from you and work a hdc.

2. Hdc in the Front Loop (hdc in FL): Insert your hook under the loop that is near you and work a hdc.
 

Gauge

Pattern for  Gauge Swatch

Ch 18 and follow the pattern for the scarf below. Once your piece measures 5 inches, measure for gauge.

9 hdc sts= 5 inches
 

Free Crochet Scarf Pattern

Pattern Notes

1. The scarf is going to look really long when you have only a few rows worked, but it will shrink as you progress more with your work. To give you an idea, my scarf measured 98 inches after the first row, 92 inches after the second row, and shrunk to 88 inches after the fourth row. So do not get confused if it looks way too long at the beginning. If your gauge meets mine, your scarf will end up being the same size :).

 

2. The stitch counts for the 2 sizes are given in the order Average(Jumbo)

 

 

Ch 128(156). You can chain any even number if you wish to make your scarf in any other length. 

 

Row 1: 1 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook ( 2 skipped chs count as a hdc), 1 hdc in each ch across to end, turn.——–127(155)  hdc

 

Row 2: Ch 1( does not count as a st here and throughout), 1 hdc in the first st, *( 1 hdc in the BL of next st, 1 hdc in FL of next st), repeat from * to last 2 sts, 1 hdc in BL of next st, 1 hdc on top of turning ch, turn.——-127(155)  hdc

 

Row 3: Ch 1( does not count as a st here and throughout), 1 hdc in the first st, *( 1 hdc in the BL of next st, 1 hdc in FL of next st), repeat from * to last 2 sts, hdc in BL of next st, 1 hdc in the last st, turn.——-127(155)  hdc

 

Repeat Row 3 until your scarf is 8 inches wide and you have completed a total of 10 rows from the beginning.

 

Pockets for your Chunky Crochet Scarf (Make 2)

Notes

1.  The pocket pattern is the same for both sizes.

2. The finished pocket measures 7 inches wide and 8-1/4 inches tall.

 

Ch 14.

Row 1: 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook(skipped 2 chains count as a hdc), 1 hdc in each ch across to end, turn.—-13 hdc

 

Note: For the next round, you will work into the 3rd loop which is a horizontal loop in the front of your work(see pic 2 below). This will push the 2 loops of your stitch to the front forming a braided design.

 

 

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in 3rd loop of the first st, 1 sc in 3rd loop of each hdc across to end. —-13 sc

 

Row 3: Ch 1(does not counts as a st), 1 hdc in same st as ch1,  1 hdc in each st across to end.——13 hdc

 

Repeat rows 2 and 3, three more times. Repeat Row 2 one last time taking care to work your sc sts tight this time. You will have a total 1o rows or 5 ribbed lines when you finish. Do not fasten off.
 

 
 

Border Around the Pocket(see pic 3 above)

Pull up the loop on your hook, sl sl to the NEXT st, sl st into each st across to the next corner, ch 1 at the corner, work 13 sl sts along the base of the pocket, ch 1 at the next corner, work sl sts up along the foundation chain side inserting your hook under the junction of 2 free loops, continue until you reach the top corner.

 

Ch 1 at the corner, work sc sts along the top of the pocket inserting your hook a little deeper to avoid leaving holes.

Once you reach the next corner, turn, ch 1, 1 sl st in first sc and each sc along the top of the pocket, fasten off and weave in the ends. 
 

Attaching the Pockets

Place the pockets 1 inch above the hem of your scarf. I tried attaching it to the edge of the scarf and found that placing it a little higher looks much better.  Take care that you are attaching both the pockets to the same side of the scarf.

 

The uneven edge should be placed at the bottom and your last sc edge will be the top of your pocket. Once you sew down the pockets, the uneven edge will even out. Thread a 1-1/2 yard strand to whip stitch the pocket onto the scarf.

 

When you whip stitch along the 2 sides of the pocket, insert your hook under 1 loop of the scarf and 1 loop of the slip stitch on the edge of the pocket. When you whip stitch along the bottom of the pocket, insert your hook under 1 loop on the scarf and 2 loops of the slip stitch on the pocket. This will even out the bottom edge and give it a nice rolled look.

 

Fringes for your Crochet Chunky Scarf with Pockets

Wrap the yarn multiple times around a notebook. Cut along one edge to get yarn strands of equal length. 

 

You should attach the fringes on the same side as the pockets as the knots formed will add to the look of your scarf. 

 

Take 2 strands at a time, fold the middle, pull the fold through the edge of the scarf, grab all 4 strands with your hook and pull through the loop formed. Repeat to attach more tassels along the base of the scarf. 

 

Finishing the Crochet Scarf with Hand Pockets
