crochet beanie free pattern finished to make pink and cream color beanie

Crochet Beanie in Pink and Cream Color

This crochet beanie takes only one skein of chunky yarn to make the adult size. For smaller sizes, you may not even need the whole skein. A one skein project that takes very little time, win-win!

Finished Textured Crochet Beanie Pattern

The texture on this beanie is achieved using a simple variation of the half double crochet stitch. The slip stitch ribbing on the hatband works surprisingly fast with a chunky yarn and a big hook.

Materials

1. Super chunky size 6 yarn. I used Big Twist Natural Blend yarn in colors Blush and Almond.

2. A size K(6.5mm)hook for the ribbing and an 8mm hook for the rest of the hat.

3. 1-1/4 inch button for embellishment

4. Fur Pom pom

5. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Finished Size

Toddler– Fits 19-inch head and is 7 1/2 inches tall

Child– Fits 21-inch head and is 8 inches tall

Adult Small– Fits 22-inch head and is 8 3/4 inches tall

Adult Large– Fits 23-inch head and is 8 3/4 inches tall

Yardage

1 skein of chunky yarn for sizes Toddler, child and Adult Small. Adult large took a little over one skein.

Each skein was 105 yards and I used up almost all of the skein with just a yard left for the woman’s small size.

Stitch Abbreviations

ch- chain

sl st- slip stitch

hdc- half double crochet

BLO- Back loop only (see stitch explanation below)

YO-yarn over

Stitch Explanations

1. Sl st in the Back Loops Only(BLO): Instead of inserting your hook under both the loops of your stitch, you will insert it only under the back loop and leave the front loop free, see the picture below.

Diagram showing hook inserted under both the loops and under the back loop only

2. hdc in third loop: Instead of working into the 2 loops of your stitch as in a regular half double crochet, work into the third loop behind your work. This will leave your stitch free in the front. See the picture below.

Third loops can be found behind the half double crochet stitches

hdc2tog: It is a decrease worked across 2 sts to join them into one. YO and insert your hook into the next st and pull up a loop, YO and insert your hook into the next st and pull up a loop, 5 loops on your hook, YO and pull through all the 5 loops on your hook.

Gauge

8 hdc sts= 4 inches

Crochet Pattern

Note: Stitch counts for bigger sizes are given in brackets in the order Toddler(Child, Adult Small, Adult Large).

Hatband Ribbing

With a K(6.5mm) hook, chain 6(6, 7, 7).

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across to end, turn.—5(5, 6, 6)sls sts

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sl in the BLO of the same st as ch 1, 1 sl st in BLO of the remaining 4(4, 5, 5)sts, turn.——5(5, 6, 6)sl sts

Repeat Row 2 until the ribbing is approximately 15(16-1/2, 18, 18-1/2) inches without stretching and you have one extra row after the braid (see pictures below). The ribbing will stretch to fit.

""

Do not stop when you can see a full braid pattern

""

Stop your ribbing when you have 1 extra row after the braid

Joining the Two Sides of the Hatband

""

On the foundation ch side, insert your hook close to the braid while sl stitching the ends of the band together

Note: When inserting your hook into the foundation chain side, insert the hook a little deeper, closer to the first ridge or braid, and not at the very edge (see pic above). This will give a seamless band once you turn it inside out.

Take your hook out of the loop, bring the two shorter ends of the band together making sure the extra row after the braid is visible outside.

Insert your hook through the foundation chain side, grab the loop on the other side and start sl stitching through both the layers by inserting your hook through the foundation chain side and the BLO of the last row of sl sts.

Turn your hatband inside out to hide the seam. Pass your skein through the hatband to bring it to the other side. You are now ready to start the crown.

How to Crochet the Crown

Pattern Notes:

1. The rest of the hat is worked with the larger 8mm hook.

2. When you work the first round of hdc sts into the hatband, make sure you work into the valleys between the braids or ridges. The ridges will be too tight to work into. See the pic below to learn where to work your sts for Round 1.

""

Work your first round into the valleys between the braids

3. While working Round 1 into the ribbing,  I did not insert my hook at the very edge but a little below it to avoid leaving holes.

Row 1: Switch to the 8mm hook.  Ch 1  at the seam and work 38(42, 44, 46)hdc sts evenly distributed around the ribbing. You can add a few increases into the valleys to adjust the stitch count if the number of valleys are lesser than your total stitch count.  Do not sl st and do not turn.—–38(42, 44, 46)hdc sts

Note: Every time you reach back near the marked st, you have completed one round.

Row 2: Work 1 hdc in the next st (first st of Round 1), place a marker in this st to indicate the first st of the round, 1 hdc in third loop of next st, *(1 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in third loop of next), repeat from * to end of the round. Do not sl st and do not turn.——-38(42, 44, 46)hdc sts

Row 3: Work a hdc in the next marked st, move the marker up into the st you just made, 1 hdc in third loop of next st, *(1 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in third loop of next), repeat from * to end of the round. Do not sl st and do not turn.——-38(42, 44, 46)hdc sts

Keep repeating Round 3 until your hat measures 6(6-1/2, 7, 7-1/2)inches tall including the ribbing. Do not forget to move the marker up at the beginning of each round.

Shaping Your Crochet Beanie

Note: hdc2tog is a decrease that is worked across 2 sts to join them into one (see stitch explanation at the beginning of the pattern).

The hdc2tog sts of the decrease rounds are worked into both the loops of one of the sts and the third loop of the second st to give continuity to the texture. Whether you will start the decrease in both the loops or the third loop will depend on the size you are making, so rounds for the different sizes have been given separately when needed.

2. Weave in the beginning tail.

Enjoy your new hat 🙂 and stay warm!

Hi great look, can this be done in worsted weight yarn? If yes how many stitches would have to increase in ribbed and crown?

You can make the ribbing 18-1/2 inches. As for the top part, you will have to do trial and error. Sorry, I can't tell unless I have tested the gauge.

This came out really cute for me but I couldn’t get the seam of the brim to join neatly. I have also made your 1.5 hour beanie which is my favorite hat to make, and I have that one down, but I could use a video on how to join this one, pretty please. I used a plum brim and a multicolor body, and love the finished product. Thanks for the pattern!
