Crochet Blanket for Baby, Sweet Dreams Blanket

Share the Love!

The Sweet Dreams crochet blanket for baby is designed using a beautiful yet simple stitch. The crochet stitch looks like rows of flowers, don’t you think?

Finished unisex crochet blanket in lilac, purple and cream displayed on a chair

If you have been following me for a while, you already know that I love fast projects. This crochet baby blanket took me only 6 hours to make. How cool is that?

I am absolutely in love with the purple color combination. I was so nervous I would run out of the lilac before I finish the blanket. Luckily, I just had enough to complete a baby size blanket.

I considered adding a shell border to this blanket but then felt like it would be an overkill. So I decided to just level the edges and leave it at that. Do you think this blanket would have looked better with a border? Any ideas?

Every time I publish a pattern I get requests for videos. Between coming up with new designs, making, writing, photographing and editing them, I hardly find time to make videos. So I try to write my patterns as clearly as possible and add videos whenever I can. Thank you for your patience!

I used 3 colors for the blanket. You are free to choose just two colors or change up the sequence the way you want. Have fun experimenting with color!

Now let’s get down to making this beautiful crochet blanket for your baby. I am excited to see your blankets. So please share them with me on Instagram.

Stitch Abbreviations

ch- chain

sl st- slip stitch

sc-single crochet

dc- double crochet

tr- triple crochet

sp-space

CL- cluster

YO- yarn over

Gauge

2 shells= 5 inches wide

Stitch Explanations

Shell: In specified st or space work (dc, ch 1)4 times, dc in the same st—shell made

Cluster (CL): *(YO, insert hook into the specified space and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops), repeat from * 2 more times, YO and pull through all the 4 loops on hook—–CL made

Crochet Pattern

With Purple yarn, Ch 142. You can chain any multiple of 10 + 2 if you wish to make your crochet blanket bigger.

Row 1: Working into the back bumps of your foundation ch, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, turn.—-141 sc

Row 2: Ch 1 ( does not count as a st here and throughout), 1 sc in the same st as ch 1, *( ch 1, sk 4 chs, shell in next, ch 1, sk 4 chs, sc in next), repeat from * across and join color Cream in last sc, turn. Fasten off the purple.——-14 shells

""

1. Row 3

Note: Do not miss the ch-1 and the ch-2 between stitches. It will significantly affect the drape of your fabric.

Row 3: With the new color joined, ch 4, *(CL in first ch-1 sp of next shell, ch 2, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, CL in last ch-1 sp of shell, ch 1), repeat from * across and after working the last CL, do not ch 1, work 1 tr in last sc, turn. ——–28 CLs

Note: I fastened off after every repeat of the Purple and Lilac stripes but just dropped the cream yarn and picked it up again for the next repeat. You can carry it loosely along the side of your work. It will get hidden once you add a sc row to straighten the edges.

Row 4 with shells and sc in between

2. Row 4

Row 4: Ch 4 ( counts as a dc and ch 1 in this Row), (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same st as ch 4, *(ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp between next 2 sc, ch 1, shell in ch-1 sp between next 2 CLs), repeat from * and after you work a sc in the last ch-1 sp between 2 sc sts, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc)all on top of turning ch-3, and join color Lilac in last dc, turn.——13 full shells + 1 half shell at each end

3. Row 5

Row 5: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, CL in next ch-1 sp, *(ch 1, CL in first ch-1 sp of next shell, ch 2, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, CL in last ch-1 sp of shell), repeat from * until just a half shell is left, ch 1, CL in first ch-1 sp of the half shell, ch 2, sc in 4th and 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.——28 CLs

""

4. Row 6

Row 6: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as ch 1, *(ch 1, shell in ch-1 sp between next 2 CLs, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp between next 2 sc), repeat from * and after you work a shell between the last pair of CLs, ch 1, sc in the last sc while joining the Cream color back, turn.———14 shells

Repeat Rows 3-6 for the pattern taking care to change colors every 2 rows and end with a CL Row. I worked in the sequence, Purple, Cream, Lilac, Cream, Purple, Cream, Lilac and so on.

Last Row: This is a sc row. Ch 1 and work 1 sc into each sc, CL, and ch-sp across to end. Fasten off.

Leveling the Ragged Sides of the Blanket

""

5. Leveling the Sides

The leveling rows should be worked on the right side of your blanket using Cream color yarn. Pick whichever side you like as the right side. Sl st to the corner of your blanket and work along the row edges, I distributed 5 sc across each stripe as shown in the picture. Repeat the same steps to level the other side of your blanket.

Finishing

Weave in any tails left.

Good morning I just love the patterns and styles you offer to those who follow you. They are easy to read and follow. I've had no problem woth them. I realize with your daughter graduating and going to college makes it challenging to make crocheted items, I want you to know that she is the most important one here not the crocheting. I'm sure that even if you took longer time off from making things that your followers will wait on your next emailed pattern. Enjoy her now because when she goes off to college you will have time to create more beautiful items and they will keep your mind off of missing her, at least for a while. Looking forward to future emails whenever they come 😘. Much hugs and love.

Fellow crocheted always
