Crochet Cotton Blanket- Perfect for summer!

Make this crochet cotton baby blanket in any cotton worsted weight yarn of your choice. You will love how delicate it looks.

Pick any three colors to make this cotton crochet blanket or just a single color. The white panels looked gorgeous in this stitch. Nothing can beat the stitch definition of 100% cotton yarns, right?

This was actually a very mindless project for me. I didn’t set out with a clear plan in mind. I just made it up as I went, so I am really curious to see what you think of it.

Materials

1. Any 100% worsted weight yarn. I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in colors White, Beach Glass, and Rose Pink.

2. A I(5.5) mm hook for the blanket and a G(4.25)mm hook for the border.

3. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Finished Size

35 inches wide and 41 inches long including the border.

Yardage

I used the big skein of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream which is 200 yards long. I used 2 skeins of the colors white and pink, and 3 skeins of the mint color.

Stitch Explanation

V-st: (hdc, ch 1, hdc)worked into the same ch or st.

4- 1/2 Repeats = 4 inches

Crochet Pattern

Notes

1. For the sake of convenience, we will call the colors white, pink, and mint.

2. If you are making this blanket in a single color, add up the yardage of all the three colors to find out how much yarn to purchase for your project.

3. To join a new color at the end of a dc row, start working your last dc as usual, and when you have 2 loops left on your hook, pull through the new color to complete your dc.

4. To join a new color at the end of a hdc row, start working your last hdc as usual, and when you have 3 loops left on your hook, pull through the new color to complete your hdc.

Stripe 1 of the Cotton Blanket-Mint

With mint color yarn, chain 111. You can chain any multiple of 3 to make your blanket wider.

Row 1: 1 V-st in the 4th ch from hook, *(sk 2 chs, V-st in next ch), repeat from * across until 2 chs are left, sk 1 ch, 1 hdc in last ch, turn.——36 V-sts

Row 2: Ch 3(counts as dc here and throughout), *(3 dc in ch-1 space of next V st), repeat from * until you work 3 dc in the ch-1 space of last V-st, sk the next dc, 1 dc on top of beg ch-2, turn.—— 110 dc

Row 3: Ch 2 ( counts as hdc here and throughout), sk next dc, V st in next dc *( skip next 2 dc, V st in next dc), repeat from * until 1 dc and beg ch-3 is left, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-3, turn.———–36 V-sts

Note: Take special care where it is mentioned not to fasten off. This will help minimize the number of tails you leave.

Rows 4-10: Continue to repeat Rows 2 and 3 in mint color yarn. At the end of Row 10 which will be a dc row, join the next color white, turn. Do not fasten off the mint color, just drop it to pick up later.

Note

The next 3 rows will be V-st rows to add some color to your blanket.

Row 11: With the white color joined ch 2, sk next dc, V st in next dc *( skip next 2 dc, V st in next dc), repeat from * until 1 dc and beg ch-3 is left, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-3 while joining the next color pink, turn. Do not fasten off the white yet.———–36 V-sts

Row 12: With the pink color joined, ch 2, V-st in the next V-st and each V-st across to end, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-2 while joining back the mint color yarn that you dropped earlier. Fasten off the pink yarn. ———–36 V-sts

Row 13: With the mint color yarn joined, ch 2, V-st in the next V-st and each V-st across to end, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-2 while joining back the white color yarn that you dropped earlier. Fasten off the mint color yarn now.———–36 V-sts

Stripe 2 of the Cotton Crochet Blanket-White

Notes

1. All the stripes except the first and the last mint stripe will have a total of 8 rows. The first and last stripes have a total of 10 rows.

Rows 14: Repeat Row 13 with the white color joined, but do not change colors at the end of the row.——36 V-sts

Row 15 to 21: Continue to repeat Rows 2 and 3 in white color and join mint color yarn at the end of row 21. You will have a total of 8 rows in the white stripe.

Note: After each wide stripe, one V-st row in a contrasting color is worked before starting the next one.

Row 22: With the mint color joined, ch 2, sk next dc, V st in next dc *( skip next 2 dc, V st in next dc), repeat from * until 1 dc and beg ch-3 is left, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-3 while joining the next color pink, turn. Fasten off the mint color.———–36 V-sts

Stripe 3-Pink

Row 23: Repeat Row 13 with the pink color joined, but do not change colors at the end of the row.——36 V-sts

Rows 24-30: Continue to repeat Rows 2 and 3 in pink color and join white color yarn at the end of row 30. You will have a total of 8 rows in the pink stripe now. Fasten off the pink color.

Row 31: With the white color joined, ch 2, sk next dc, V st in next dc *( skip next 2 dc, V st in next dc), repeat from * until 1 dc and beg ch-3 is left, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-3 while joining the next color mint, turn. Fasten off the white color.———–36 V-sts

Stripe 4-Mint

Row 32: Repeat Row 13 with the mint color joined, but do not change colors at the end of the row.——36 V-sts

Rows 33-39: Continue to repeat Rows 2 and 3 in mint color and join pink color yarn at the end of row 39. You will have a total of 8 rows in the mint stripe now. Fasten off the mint color.

Row 40: With the pink color joined, ch 2, sk next dc, V st in next dc *( skip next 2 dc, V st in next dc), repeat from * until 1 dc and beg ch-3 is left, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-3 while joining the next color white, turn. Fasten off the pink color.———–36 V-sts

Stripe 5-White

Row 41: Repeat Row 13 with the white color joined, but do not change colors at the end of the row.——36 V-sts

Rows 42-48: Continue to repeat Rows 2 and 3 in white color and join mint color yarn at the end of row 48. You will have a total of 8 rows in the white stripe now. Fasten off the white color.

Row 49: With the mint color joined, ch 2, sk next dc, V st in next dc *( skip next 2 dc, V st in next dc), repeat from * until 1 dc and beg ch-3 is left, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-3 while joining the next color pink, turn. Fasten off the mint color.———–36 V-sts

Stripe 6-Pink

Row 50: Repeat Row 13 with the pink color joined,but do not change colors at the end of the row.——36 V-sts

Rows 51-57: Continue to repeat Rows 2 and 3 in pink color and join white color yarn at the end of row 57. You will have a total of 8 rows in the pink stripe now. Do not fasten off the pink color.

Row 58: With the white color joined, ch 2, sk next dc, V st in next dc *( skip next 2 dc, V st in next dc), repeat from * until 1 dc and beg ch-3 is left, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-3 while joining the next color mint, turn. Fasten off the white color.———–36 V-sts

Row 59: With the mint color joined, ch 2, V-st in the next V-st and each V-st across to end, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-2 while joining back the pink color yarn that you dropped earlier. Fasten off the mint yarn. ———–36 V-sts

Row 60: With the pink color joined, ch 2, V-st in the next V-st and each V-st across to end, 1 hdc on top of beg ch-2 while joining the mint color for your last stripe. Fasten off the pink yarn. ———–36 V-sts

Last Stripe -Mint

Row 61: Repeat Row 13 with the mint color joined, but do not change colors at the end of the row..——36 V-sts

Rows 62-70: Continue to repeat Rows 2 and 3 in mint color and join white color yarn at the end of row 70 for the border. You will have a total of 10 rows in this last stripe. Fasten off the mint color.

Border for Crochet Cotton Baby Blanket Pattern

Notes

1. Do not turn your work. The border is worked on the same side you worked your last row.

2. While working the first round of the border, take care to work around any tails left along the sides if they are white or they match the color of the stripe. Any other colors will show through your work and is best woven in later.

Round 1: Ch 1 at the corner(not counted as a st), work 2 sc in the corner, evenly distribute sc sts along the side of the blanket. I worked 2 sc across a dc row, 1 sc in the junction between a dc and hdc row, and 1 sc across a hdc row.

Continue to work sc sts along the side until you reach the next corner, 3 sc in the corner, proceed to work sc sts along the foundation ch side, work 1 sc in each of the skipped chs, and 1 sc at the base of each V-st until you hit the next corner.

3 sc in the corner, work sc sts along the side of the blanket until you reach the top corner, 3 sc in the corner, 1 sc in each st across the last row of your blanket, 1 sc in the corner, sl st to the first sc. Do not turn.

Note: For the next round, switch to the smaller 4.25mm hook.

Round 2: *(Ch 5, sl st to the 3rd ch from hook to make a picot, ch 2, sk 2 sts, sl st to next st), repeat from * until you reach near the next corner, if you have one extra st to the corner, you can ch 3 after the picot, sk 3 sts, and then sl st to the corner.

Now continue to work along the foundation chain side. Here you will skip 3 sts instead of 2 as the sts are tightly packed. *(Ch 5, sl st to the 3rd ch from hook to make a picot, ch 2, sk 3 sts, sl st to next st), repeat from * until you reach the next corner.

Now again you will go back to skipping 2 sts. *(Ch 5, sl st to the 3rd ch from hook to make a picot, ch 2, sk 2 sts, sl st to next st), repeat from * until you reach the next corner.

Now work along the last row of your blanket skipping 3 sts like you did across the foundation chain side. *(Ch 5, sl st to the 3rd ch from hook to make a picot, ch 2, sk 3 sts, sl st to next st), repeat from * until you end with a sl st in the corner you started this round. Fasten off.
