Crochet Pattern Hat Free, Color Pop Hat

Try this crochet pattern hat free and I’m sure you will enjoy making it in many different colors. After designing a couple of plain colored hats I was itching for a colorful one, so here it is!

The stitch pattern used is very easy and beginner-friendly. It is a variation of the V-st and works up very fast.

What colors would you make it in? Would you make a contrasting color hat band like my yellow and green hats or keep it all one color like my black one?

Materials

1. Worsted weight (size 4) yarn in black and white and one contrasting color of your choice. I used Caron One Pound yarn.

2. Hook I(5.5mm) for the ribbing and hook J(6mm) for the rest of the hat.

3. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Finished Size

Baby– Fits 18-inch head and is 7 inches tall

Toddler– Fits 19-inch head and is 7 1/2 inches tall

Child– Fits 21-inch head and is 8 inches tall

Adult Small– Fits 22-inch head and is 8 3/4 inches tall

Adult Large– Fits 23-inch head and is 8 3/4 inches tall

ch- chain

sc-single crochet

dc-double crochet

Stitch Explanations

BL(Back Loop): Work in BL(Back Loop) only means you work your stitch inserting your hook just under the back loop of the st leaving the front loop free. See pic.

dc2tog: It is a decrease worked across 2 sts to join them into one. *(YO, insert your hook into the next st and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops)repeat from * one more time, YO and pull through the remaining 3 loops on your hook to complete your dc2tog.

Crochet Hat Pattern

Note: The pattern is written for the yellow hat.

Hat Ribbing

With I (5.5mm) hook and yellow color yarn, ch 8(8, 9, 10, 10).

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across to end, turn. ——-7(7, 8, 9, 9) sc

Row 2: Ch 1(does not count as a st) , 1 sc in BL of the same st as ch 1, 1 sc in BL of each st across to end, turn.—–7(7, 8, 9, 9) sc

Keep repeating Row 2 until your ribbing measures 14(15, 16-1/2, 18, 18-1/2)inches without stretching.

Joining the Hat Ribbing

Bring the 2 edges of your ribbing together, take out your hook from the loop, insert your hook through the foundation chain side and pull the loop through both the layers, now start sl stitching through the free loop of the foundation chain and the BL only of the sts on the last row of your ribbing. Do not fasten off. This will give you a seam that blends in with the rest of the ribbing. You can see the video at the end of the blog post to learn how to join the ribbing seamlessly.

Crown of the Crochet Hat

Notes

1. Switch to the bigger hook J(6mm) for the rest of the hat.

2. You join the next color while working the last stitch of every round. To do this, you start working the sc or dc as usual and when you have 2 loops on your hook, you pull through the new color. You can watch the video at the end of the blog post.

3. Every time you change colors, just drop the current color and do not fasten off. You will pick it up in the next round.

Round 1: Ch 1 at the seam, evenly distribute 60 (66, 72, 75, 78) sc around the ribbing and join the white yarn while you complete your last sc. Do not sl st and do not turn.

Round 2: Directly work (sc, ch 1, dc) in the next st(the very first sc), *[sk 2 sts, (sc, ch 1, dc)all in the next st], repeat from * until 2 sts are left and join black yarn while completing the final dc of the last repeat. Do not sl st and do not turn.————20(22, 24, 25, 26) repeats

Round 3: Directly work (sc, ch 1, dc) in the ch-1 space of the first repeat, work (sc, ch 1, dc) in the ch-1 space of each repeat across to end and join the white yarn back while completing the last dc. Do not sl st and do not turn.————20(22, 24, 25, 26) repeats

Note: It will be hard to see the ch-1 space in black color yarn, so you can feel the gap with your fingers and then insert your hook.

Repeat Round 3 switching between white and black colors every round. Once your work measures 6 (6-1/2, 6-1/2, 7, 7-1/2), proceed to the decrease rounds below.

Shaping the Crochet Hat

Note

1. In the first decrease round, you will eliminate the ch 1 in the repeats to start shaping the hat.

Decrease Round 1: Directly work (sc, dc) in the ch-1 space of the first repeat, work (sc, dc) in the ch-1 space of each repeat across to end, sl st to the first sc while picking up the next color, do not turn.————20(22, 24, 25, 26) repeats

Decrease Round 2: Ch 2 ( counts as a dc), 1 dc in next st, *(dc2tog across next 2 sts), keep repeating from * to end of the round, sl st to top of ch 2 while picking up the next color, do not turn. ———– 21 (23, 25, 26, 27) sts

For sizes Baby and Toddler, do not join the next color at the end of the above round, sl st to the top of ch 2 and fasten off with a 14-inch tail for cinching the top. Jump to ‘Finishing the Hat’.

Only for sizes Child(Adult Small, Adult Large)

Round 3: Ch 2 ( counts as a dc), 1 dc in each st around, sl st to top of beg ch-2, do not join next color and do not turn. ———–25(26, 27) sts

Last Round: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, sl st to first sc, fasten off with a 14-inch tail for cinching the hat.

Finishing the Crochet Hat

1. Turn the hat inside out, thread the tail left at the crown through a yarn needle, go in and out through the very last round, cinch shut, make a couple of knots and weave in the remaining tail.

2. Weave in any tails left.

3. Make and attach a matching pom pom to the top of the hat.
