Diamond Stitch Crochet Blanket Pattern, a warm and chunky blanket

Diamond crochet blanket pattern finished in Mauve, cream and sand colors

This lovely crochet blanket with a diamond pattern is created using a fake granny stitch and clever color changes. Using two contrasting hues with a neutral color will make the design stand out.

Even though it appears like you are changing colors constantly, you only need to fasten off after three rows. So there are less tails to weave in than you might think from a design like this.

What I liked about this crochet diamond blanket was how it draped beautifully even though the stitches were tightly packed. It makes a warm, comforting blanket

Crochet Pattern

1. For the sake of convenience, we will call the colors Cream, Brown, and Mauve.

2. You will have to pull yarn from the center of the skein while working this pattern to conveniently switch colors. If you cannot find the tail in the center, make a center pull ball as shown here. Since we are using chunky yarn, you can use a kitchen napkin roll in place of the short toilet paper roll.

3. A single color row alternates with a double color row. For example, the first row is worked entirely in brown, whereas the second row is worked in brown and cream.

4. When changing colors in a double-colored row, work over the preceding color. For example, in Row 2, you work the first two hdc with cream and then join brown yarn; when you work the next two hdc with brown, you will work over the cream yarn to carry it along the back of your work.

5. To keep your two skeins from tangling when working the double-colored rows, always bring the previous color to the right side while switching colors. Another option is to pull out a large amount of yarn from both skeins, giving you enough give to switch the colors without having to move the yarn skeins back and forth. Finally, you can pull out the skein you fastened off. Warning: This second approach can sometimes result in serious tangles.

6. To join a new color while working a hdc stitch, start working the hdc and when you have 3 loops left on your hook, pull through the new color. You can see a video here: How to Join New Color.

7. Beginning ch-2 counts as a hdc throughout the pattern.

With the brown color yarn, ch 61. You can chain any odd multiple of 2 +3  if you want to make your blanket a different width. For example, you can chain (31 x 2) +3 or (33 x 2) +3, etc since 31 and 33 are odd numbers.

Row 1 (Full Brown Row): 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, *(sk next ch, 2 hdc in next ch), repeat from * to last 2 chs, sk next ch, 1 hdc in last ch, 1 more hdc in the last ch while joining the cream color yarn, turn.——-30 hdc clusters
