Work this easy free crochet shawl pattern in Lion Brand Mandala yarn and I bet you will love the outcome no matter which colorway you chose. I love this yarn and this stitch, can you tell?

Finished shawl in pink, gray and cream with a tassel

This beautiful crochet stitch is super simple to work. Don’t let the texture fool you.

Finished shawl in pink, gray and cream folded to show drape

I would suggest you choose a colorway with light shades as it will bring out the texture even more. I eliminated the really dark shades of gray and pink from my cakes.

Don’t have Mandala yarn? No problem! Use any DK weight yarn in a light shade to make a beautiful crochet shawl.

Materials

1. DK weight size 3 yarn. I used Lion Brand Mandala Baby in color Dreamworld.

2. A size K(6.5mm) hook and a J(6mm)hook.

Finished Size

52 inches wide and 25 inches wide. You can easily make the crochet shawl bigger by repeating the last 2 rows. You might need an additional skein if you plan on making it bigger.

Yardage

I used 2 skeins of Lion Brand Mandala. Each skein is 590 yards long.

Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern is written in US terms.

ch- chain

sc- single crochet

dc- double crochet

sk- skip

fpsc- front post single crochet

YO- yarn over

Gauge

With K(6.5mm) hook, 15 dc sts= 4 inches

Stitch Explanations

Front Post Single Crochet (fpsc): A fpsc is worked as a regular sc except for the way you insert your hook. Insert hook from front to back and to front again around the vertical post (leg) of the specified dc st and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook to complete the fpsc.

For a fpsc, the hook is inserted in the same way as working a front post double crochet. See my tutorial on front post double crochet here: Front Post Double Crochet Tutorial

Crochet Shawl Pattern

Pattern Notes

1. The shawl is worked top down. I worked the small magenta triangle first and worked down to the cream block last.

2. If there was an abrupt color change in the middle of a dc row, I unraveled it and joined the new color at the beginning of the row. If the color change is in a sc row, you don’t have to do this as it won’t be visible on your poncho. Again, this is a matter of personal choice and you can choose to let the self-striping yarn do its job of changing colors.

3. After I finished working the first 2 blocks of colors with the first skein, I used the light gray, pink, and cream from both the skeins. This made sure that each block of color is approximately the same width.

With the J(6mm) hook, ch 5, sl st to the first ch to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 3( counts as a st here and throughout), 4 dc in ring, ch 2, 5 dc in ring, ch 3 and turn.——-10 dc

Row 2: 2 dc in same st as ch 3, 1 dc in next 4 sts, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in ch-2 space, 1 dc in next 4 sts, 3 dc on top of beg ch-3, ch 3 and turn. ——16 dc

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st as ch 3, 1 dc in next 7 sts, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in ch-2 space, 1 dc in next 7 sts, 3 dc on top of beg ch-3, ch 1 and turn. ———–22 dc

Note: Switch to the bigger hook for the rest of the pattern.

Row 4: 3 sc in same st as ch 1, *(ch 3, sk 3 sts, 1 sc in next), repeat from * one more time, ch 2, sk 2 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 space, ch 2, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, ch 3, sk 3, sc in next st, ch 3, sk 3, 3 sc in beg ch-3, ch 3 and turn.——-12 sc scts

Row 5: 2 dc in same st, 1 dc in next 2 sc sts, *(sk next ch-3 loop, 3 dc in next sc), repeat from * one more time, sk next ch-2 loop and next sc, (3dc, ch2, 3 dc)in next ch-2 space in the middle, sk next sc and ch-2 loop, 3 dc in next sc, sk next ch-3 loop, 3 dc in next sc, sk next ch-3 loop, 1 dc in next 2 sc sts, 3 dc in last st, ch 1 and turn.—-28 dc

Row 6: 3 sc in same st as ch 1, ch 2, sk 2 sts, 1 fpsc in next, *(ch 3, sk 2 dc, 1 fpsc in middle dc of next dc group), repeat from * 2 more times, sk 1 dc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 space in the middle, sk 1 dc, 1 fpsc in next dc, *(ch 3, sk 2 dc , fpsc in middle dc of next dc group), repeat from * one more time, ch 3, sk 2 dc, fpsc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, 3 sc in beg ch-3, ch 3 and turn. ——16 sc

Row 7: 2 dc in same st as ch 3, ch 2, sk 2 sc and next ch-2 loop, 3 dc in each of the next 4 fpsc sts (the 4th fpsc will be right before the (sc, ch 2, sc) in the middle), sk 1 sc, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc)into ch-2 space in the middle, sk next sc, 3 dc in next fpsc right after it, 3 dc in each of the next 3 fpsc sts, ch 2, 3 dc in last st, ch 1 and turn.——-36 sc

Row 8: 3 sc in same st as ch1, fpsc in next dc, *(ch 3, fpsc in middle dc of next dc group), repeat from * 4 more times, sk next dc,  (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 space, fpsc in middle dc of next dc group, *(ch 3, fpsc in middle dc of next dc group), repeat from * 4 more times, 3 sc in beg ch-3, ch 3 and turn.—–20 sc

Row 9: 2 dc in same st as ch3, sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next fpsc (this fpsc will be hard to see and blend in with the ch-3 loop, so look for it right before the first ch-3 loop), 3 dc in each of the next 5 fpsc sts, sk next sc right before ch-2, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc), in ch-2 space, sk next sc, 3 dc in next fpsc, 3 dc in each of the next 5 fpsc sts, sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in last st, ch 1 and turn.——-48 dc

We have now established the stitch pattern. Repeat Row 8 and 9 until your shawl is the width you want.

Every time you repeat  Row 8 you will repeat the parts in ( )  two more times. For example, in the next repeat of Row 8, you will repeat the parts in ( ) 6 more times, then 8 more times, then 10 more times and so on.

Every time you repeat Row 9, you will have 2 extra fpsc sts to work your 3dc into( see the highlighted part in Row 9). For example, in the next repeat of Row 9, you will work 3 dc sts into 7 fpsc sts, the in the next repeat into 9 fpsc sts and so on.

Adding a Border to the top (Optional)

The top was curling a bit due to the nature of the stitch pattern. So I added this border which is totally optional.

If it doesn’t fix the curling. Put a piece of cloth over the shawl and lightly block just the top edge with an iron on medium setting. NEVER use the iron directly on the crochet fabric as the acrylic yarn will melt and ruin your hard work.

Border: With leftover yarn, sl st to the top left corner of your shawl, 2 sc right next to the corner, *(ch 3, sc on top of next ribbing line) repeat from * and when you reach the middle triangle part, *(ch 3 and sc in the junction between 2 dc rows), repeat from * and continue to work *(ch 3, sc on top of next ribbing line), 2 sc in last corner, fasten off.

Tassels for your Crochet Shawl(Make 3)

Use a 4-1/4 inch cardboard to make tassels. You can see how to make and attach tassels at the bottom of this crochet pattern here. Just take care that you need to wrap the yarn around the cardboard only 13 times.

Finishing the Crochet Shawl

1. Weave in any tails left.

2. Attach 3 tassels to the 3 corners of your triangular shawl.

Oh Wow! Such a lively shawl! Can it be made rectangle style because triangle shawls are not becoming on me. Sure is pretty though!

I have a scarf worked in the same st here: https://crochetdreamz.com/2017/01/ocean-waves-scarf-free-crochet-scarf.html You can just repeat the rows to turn it into a rectangular shawl. Hope that helps!
