I have had this velvet yarn in my collection for quite a few months but didn’t know what to design with it. The first thought that came to mind was slippers. So you can expect some velvety soft slippers soon.

Designing with this yarn was tricky as the stitches would just blend in and not show a pattern. I experimented with different stitches and finally settled for this stitch which was a V-stitch variation, but I didn’t like the big gaps.

I modified the stitch pattern to make it less lacy but still show some texture, and I added a picot border to complete the look. I feel the border looks great on this yarn. What do you think?

How to Crochet an Afghan with Velvet yarn- Tips

1. The stitches can be hard to see if you use a dark or white color yarn. So start your blanket with a light color stripe. Once you are past the first row, it will be easy to work the stitch pattern.

2. Since the yarn is slippery in nature, I tied a knot with the 2 tails before working over the tails to hide them in the border.

Crochet Pattern

Note: Every time you join a new color, fasten off the previous color.

With the light Pink color yarn, ch 98. You can ch any multiple of 6+2 to make your blanket wider.

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, *(ch 1, sk 2 chs, V-st in next ch, ch 1, sk 2 chs, 1 sc in next), repeat from * to end, turn.—-16 V-sts

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), 1 dc in the same st, ch 1, 1 sc in the ch-1 space of next V-st, *(ch 1, 3 dc in next sc, ch 1, 1 sc in the ch-1 space of next V-st ), repeat from * and after your work a sc in the ch-1 space of the last V-st, ch 1, 2 dc in last sc, turn. ——15 dc clusters

Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st as ch 1, ch 1, V-st in next sc, *(ch 1, 1 sc in the middle dc of the next dc cluster, ch 1, V-st in next sc), repeat from * and after V-st in the last sc, ch 1, 1 sc on top of beginning ch-3, turn.——16 V-sts

Row 4: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as ch 3, ch 1, 1 sc in the ch-1 space of next V-st, *(ch 1, 3 dc in next sc, ch 1,  1 sc in ch-1 space of next V-st), repeat from * and after sc in ch-1 space of  last V-st, ch 1, 2 dc in last sc, turn.——15 dc clusters

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 alternately until you have a total of 10 Rows in the light pink color and join the Burgundy color.

5 dc clusters on top of one another means you have completed 10 rows

The rows will be hard to count in this stitch pattern. If you can count 5 dc clusters stacked on top of each other, that means you have completed your 10 rows. See pic above.

Row 11-20: With burgundy color yarn, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At the end of your 20th row, join the white color yarn.

Row 21- 30: With white color yarn, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At the end of your 30th row, join the light pink color yarn.

Row 31- 40: With light pink color yarn, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At the end of your 40th row, join the burgundy color yarn.

Row 41-50: With burgundy color yarn, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At the end of your 50th row, join the white color yarn.

Row 51-60: With white color yarn, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At the end of your 60th row, join the light pink color yarn.

Row 61-70: With light pink color yarn, repeat Rows 3 and 4. At the end of your 70th row, join the burgundy color yarn.

This yarn is hand wash only. How feasible is it to wash? I’ve read worming is an issue with Bernat velvet, how bad was it with this stitch. I am in love with the look of this blanket, but I’m worried of the work being wasted.

I have not tried washing it yet. I think making a small swatch and washing that first will give you a good idea of how well this holds up. Make sure you follow the washing instructions on the label.

I used crushed velvet yarn and made it larger for my 1 year old grandson. I'm just learning to crochet and this is only my second blanket (I made a, scarf for my son while making this blanket because he loves the feel of the blanket I made for his daughter)

This pattern is so lovely and I love the lightweight flexible feel compared to the first blanket I made with velvet. This is just so perfect. Thank you for sharing!
