This post stitch crochet blanket pattern makes a simple crochet blanket with front post stitches only.
It is a very thick and cozy blanket pattern. The easy blanket with front post stitches places post stitches in a ladder-like pattern giving it an amazing texture. I am sure you will love the texture of this free crochet blanket with front post stitches.
The herringbone half double crochet used in the pattern can be replaced with a regular half double crochet if you want to make this blanket quicker. You change colors every 2 rows but you won’t get any extra tails because you will just carry the yarn along the side.
Each baby-size blanket takes just around 2 skeins of each color. You will need a little more than 2 skeins of the cream color as you need it for the border as well.

Pattern Notes
1. I would highly suggest you make a small gauge swatch to practice your stitches, so you can learn how tall you have to work your fpdc sts. Chain 23 and follow the blanket pattern below to make your gauge swatch.
2. If you don’t like working Herringbone half double crochet (hhdc) you can replace it with a regular hdc st.
3. For the sake of convenience, we will call the colors purple and cream.
4. You will change colors every 2 rows.
5. To join a new color at the end of a row, start working your hhdc as usual and when you have 2 loops left on your hook, move the current color to the right, and YO and pull through the new color to complete the hhdc. Moving the current skein to the right before joining the next color will ensure that your yarn skeins don’t get tangled.
6. Every time you change colors, do not fasten off. Just drop the color to pick up later. It will be carried along the sides of the blanket and get hidden once you work the border.
7. The blanket edges will roll up due to the nature of the stitch but will straighten out once you add the border.
With cream color yarn, Ch 63. The initial chain is a multiple of 5+ 3.
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nc ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across to end, turn. —–62 sc
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 hhdc in first st (in the same st you worked you beginning ch-1), 1 hhdc in each st across to last st, work a hhdc in the last st while joining the purple color yarn, turn.—–62 hhdc
Notes
1. When working the fpdc sts, pull up the loop to the height of the current row, about 1-1/4″ tall.
2. When working a fpdc into a fpdc st starting from Rows 5 and onwards, you can lift the fpdc with your fingers and insert your hook under the post easily.
3. The fpdc sts of Row 3 will be a little difficult as you are working them into sc sts, but all the rows following that will be very quick and easy. You can stretch your crochet fabric to find the gaps on either side of the sc st.
Row 3: Ch 1 with purple (does not count as a st here and throughout), 1 sc in first st, 1 fpdc in the 5th sc of Row 1, 1 fpdc in the next sc of Row 1, *(sk 2 sts behind the fpdc sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts of current row, sk 3 sc in Row 1 from the last fpdc your worked (see pic below), 1 fpdc in next 2 sc sts of Row 1), repeat from * until you have only 1 sc left in Row 1, sk 2 sts behind the fpdc sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts of the current row, sk the last st, 1 sc in beginning ch-1, turn.———24 fpdc + 38 sc sts
Row 4: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 hhdc in first st (in the same st you worked you beginning ch-1), 1 hhdc in each st across to last st, work a hhdc in the last st while joining the cream color yarn back, turn.—–62 hhdc
Row 5: Ch 1 with cream color yarn, 1 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 fpdc in 1st fpdc one row below, 1 fpdc in next fpdc, *(sk 2 sts behind the fpdc sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts of the current row, 1 fpdc in next 2 fpdc one row below), repeat from * until you work a fpdc in the last 2 fpdc one row below, sk 2 sts behind, sk last st of current row, 1 sc in beginning ch-1, turn.—–24 fpdc + 38 sc sts
Row 6: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 hhdc in first st (in the same st you worked you beginning ch-1), 1 hhdc in each st across to last st, work a hhdc in the last st while joining the purple color yarn back, turn.—–62 hhdc
Row 7: Ch 1 with purple, 1 sc in 1st st, 1 fpdc in first fpdc one row below, 1 fpdc in next fpdc, *(sk 2 sts behind the fpdc sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts of the current row, 1 fpdc in next 2 fpdc one row below), repeat from * until your work a fpdc into the last 2 fpdc one row below, sk 2 sts behind the fpdc sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts of the current row, sk last st, 1 sc in beginning ch1, turn. ——–24 fpdc + 38 sc sts
Row 8: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 hhdc in first st (in the same st you worked you beginning ch-1), 1 hhdc in each st across to last st, work a hhdc in the last st while joining the cream color yarn back, turn.—–62 hhdc
Repeat Rows 5 to 8 until your blanket is 36″ long and you end in 2 cream rows (Rows 5 and 6). Fasten off the purple color now and continue with the cream-colored yarn.
One tip to memorize the stitch pattern is that the cream rows start with 4 sc and end with 1 sc, while the purple rows start with 1 sc and end with 4 sc.
Border
Round 1: Ch 1 and turn to work along the last row you just completed. 1 sc in the 1st st, 1 sc in next st, sc2tog across next 2 sts, *(1 sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog across next 2 sts), repeat from * until you reach the next corner, 3 sc in the corner, work along the side of the blanket and evenly distribute sc sts, I worked 2 sc across each stripe.
Continue working sc to the next corner, 3 sc in the corner, continue along the foundation chain side, and work under the free loops of the foundation chain. Each st should be worked under the junction of 2 free loops to avoid leaving holes in your blanket. *( 1 sc in next 2 loops, sc2tog across next 2 loops), repeat from * to next corner, 3 sc in corner.
Continue to distribute sc sts along the last edge of the blanket taking care to work over the yarn carried along the sides, 3 sc sts along the first cream stripe, distribute 2 sc across each remaining stripe end all the way to the next corner, 1 sc in the corner, sl st to first sc. Do not turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, *(1 sc in each st across to next corner, 2 sc in the corner), repeat from * to end of the round, sl st to first sc, fasten off.
