Crochet Market Tote in white and green

I really enjoyed working up this easy crochet market bag in bright green. I wasn’t sure I would have enough of the green yarn but I got lucky, yay!

Sugar and Cream Crochet Market Bags in gray and green

This Lily Sugar and Cream market bag pattern takes only 1 skein of yarn in each color. I used the bigger 200-yard balls for this free crochet tote bag pattern.

You can make the bag in two different sizes. The handles also come with a long and short option.

Materials

1.Worsted weight cotton yarn (size 4). I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn in colors Ecru and Mod Green for the bigger bag and colors Ecru and Overcast for the smaller bag. You can choose your favorite colors.

2. Size J – 6 mm crochet hook.

3. A stitch marker. If you don’t have a stitch marker, you can also use a piece of contrasting color yarn or even a safety pin.

4. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Finished Size

Bigger Bag: 12 inches wide and 14 inches tall not including the handle

Smaller Bag: 13 1/2 inches wide and 12 inches tall not including the handle

Yardage

Bigger Bag: 1 skein of each color. I used the bigger 200-yard skeins of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream.

Smaller bag:  Takes only 110 yards of the gray color yarn and around 190 yards of the cream color. So you can use the 120-yard skein for the gray color and the 200-yard skein for the cream color.

Crochet Market Tote Pattern

Pattern Notes

1. The bag is worked bottom-up in a tube. Then the handle is added to the top to complete the bag. Finally, the bottom of the bag is seamed shut with a row of sc.

2. Stitch counts for the two sizes are given in the order: Small Bag(Big Bag). Kindly note that your foundation chain will be longer for the smaller bag as it is wider than the bigger one.

3. The bag comes in 2 sizes. I am 5 feet 2″ and I find the smaller bag is the perfect size for me. The big bag stretches almost up to my knees. So the bigger bag might be more suitable for taller people.

4. There are 2 handle options too. Make the longer handle if you want to carry the bag on your shoulders and the shorter option to carry it in your hand.

First Half of the Crochet Market Bag

With Mod Green color yarn(gray for the smaller bag), ch 85(75), sl st to the first ch to form a ring. Take care not to twist your chain.

Round 1: Ch 3 ( counts as a st here and throughout), 1 dc in next ch and each ch across to end, sl st to top of beg ch-3. Do not turn. ——85(75)dc

Round 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 2 sts, *( ch 2, sk next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 3 sts), repeat from * to last 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts, sl st to top of beg ch-3. Do not turn. ——–17(15) dc groups

Round 3: Pull up the loop on your hook to make it a little bigger, work 1 sc in next dc(middle dc of the dc group), *(shell in next ch-2 space, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc), repeat from * until you work a shell in the last ch-2 space, sl st to first sc. Do not turn.—-17(15) shells

Note: In the next round, the 3 dc sts will be on top of the middle 3 sts of the shells.

Round 4: Sl st loosely into next 2 dc, ch 3 (counts as a dc), 1 dc in next 2 dc, *(ch 2, sk 3 dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc), repeat from * until you work 3 dc sts on top of the last shell, ch 2, sl st to beg ch-3. Do not turn. ——-17(15) dc groups

Repeat Rounds 3 and 4 until you have a total of 3(5) shell rounds. Your last round will be a shell round. Fasten off the green or gray yarn.

Second Half of the Crochet Market Tote

The rest of the bag and the handles will be worked in cream color yarn.

Round 8(Round 12): With the cream color yarn, sl st to the second dc of any shell, ch 2(counts as a dc here), 1 dc in next 2 dc, *(ch 2, sk 3 dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc), repeat from * until you work 3 dc sts on top of the last shell, ch 2, sl st to beg ch-3. Do not turn. ——-17(15) dc groups

Round 9(Round 13): Pull up the loop on your hook to make it a little bigger, work 1 sc in next dc(middle dc of the dc group), *(shell in next ch-2 space, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc), repeat from * until you work a shell in the last ch-2 space, sl st to first sc. Do not turn.—-17(15)shells

For both the big and small bags, repeat the above 2 Rounds until you have a total of 4 shell rounds in cream color. My big bag in the picture has 5 shell rounds,  but after testing how far it will stretch, I found that it was better to make this part a tad shorter and work only 4 shell rounds.

Round 16(Round 20): Sl st loosely into next 2 dc, ch 1 ( counts as first sc), place a marker in this ch 1,  1 sc in next 2 dc, *(ch 2, sk 3 dc, 1 sc in next 3 dc), repeat from * until you work 3 sc sts on top of the last shell, ch 2,  sl st to marked beg ch-1. Do not turn. ——-17(15) sc groups

Round 17(Round 21): Ch 1(counts as first sc), place a marker in this ch 1, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, *( 1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next ch-2 space), repeat from * until you work 2sc in last ch-2 space, sl st to beg ch-1. Do not turn. ——85(75) sc

Handle for your French Market Bag(2 options)

Notes

1.  You can choose if you want a long handle to carry it over your shoulder or a short handle to hold it in your hand.

2. At the end of the round, do not work into the st that you see at the base of the marked ch-1. That is a sl st which is not counted as a st.

""

1. Shows how the front handle is positioned on top of two ch-2 spaces.

Round 18(Round 22): Ch 1(counts as a sc), place a marker in this ch 1, 1 sc in next 9 sts to reach the top of a ch-2 space as shown in the picture above, Ch 20 for a small handle(ch 60 if making a long handle), sk 14 sts and sc in the next st, you should now be on top of a ch-2 space, 1 sc in the next 20(17)sts to reach the back of your bag.

""

2. Starting the back handle directly behind the front handle

""

3. The back handle ends where the front handle ends

Now put the bag down flat, make sure the long chain for the handle is symmetrical on the front side, do a few more sc sts to reach directly behind where the front handle starts, ch 20(60) again, sc right behind where the front handle ends. This will ensure that both your front and back handles are aligned. See pics 2 and 3 above.

Continue to work 1 sc in each st across to end of the round, sl st to beg ch-1.

""

4. When you reach the base of the long chain, work 1 sc into each of the chains and continue along the top of the bag.

Round 19(Round 23): Ch 1, place a marker in this ch 1, 1 sc in each st across to the base of the long chain, work 1 sc into each of the 20(60) chs for the handle, continue to work on top of the bag, 1 sc in each st until you reach the base of the back handle, 1 sc into each of the 20(60) chs, continue to work on top of the bag, 1 sc in each st across to end of the round, sl st to marked ch-1. See pic 4 above.

Note: In the remaining rounds you will continue to work on top of the handle to make it wider.

Round 20(Round 24): Ch 1, place a marker in this ch 1, 1 sc in each st across to end of the round,  sl st to marked ch-1.

Repeat the above round two more times. Fasten off.

5. Completed long handle

Seaming the Bottom of your Crochet Grocery Bag

Pattern Notes

1. To seam the bottom of the bag, you will use sc sts. The sc sts should be worked into both the layers at a time.

2. You don’t work into the free loops of the foundation chain but insert your hook into the gaps between your dc sts to work your sc.

Turn your bag inside out. Lay it down flat and makes sure you align the front and back handles. With matching yarn, sl st to the corner, sc in the first gap between the dc sts, work 1 sc in each gap across to end. Fasten off.

I altered my crochet market bag a little by giving it a base. I will use a piece of heavy cardboard to keep the base flat.

Just completing the bag. I'd like to compliment you on how clear your instructions are and it is so appreciated! I love that you give two sizes for the bag. I plan to do both!
