This crochet sun hat pattern is one of the first I designed. It includes multiple sizes from baby to adult.
The flowers are optional and come in 2 different sizes. You can add it for babies and kids and opt not to add it for women. The choice is yours.
You can use acrylic worsted-weight yarn or worsted-weight cotton yarn for a more breathable hat. Flowers can be made from any yarn scraps you have.
Let’s start making one for the summer!
Crochet Sun Hat
Materials
1. Worsted weight yarn in the primary color and in 3 coordinating colors for the flowers.
2. Hook H (5 mm) for the hat and F (3.75mm) for the flowers. Flowers for sizes 3 years and up are worked using H hook itself.
3. Yarn needle to weave in the ends.
Finished Size
Note: The hat height is measured just before the increase round for the brim starts. The pattern for each size mentions when to measure the hat height.
0-3 months: 13″ in circumference
3-6 months: 14″ in circumference
6-12 months: 17″ in circumference
1-3 Years: 18″ in circumference
3 to 10 Years: 19″ in circumference
Preteen to Adult: 20-1/2″ in circumference

1. Measuring hat height
Gauge

2. Measuring the diameter for gauge
Gauge
The gauge for each size is mentioned in the pattern.
Yardage
The hat will need around 160 yards of the main color for kid sizes and around 220 yards for the adult size.
Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern is in standard American terms.
dc: double crochet
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
sl st: slip stitch
ch: chain
sk: skip
Tips
1. Make the number of rounds specified for each size and check your gauge.
2. Working in rounds without turning can cause your rows to stick together closely and give lesser height. So follow the pattern and turn at each round.
3. If you are a beginner it will be a good idea to place a marker at the top of beginning chain 2 or beginning chain 1 of each round. This will help you know where the round ends and where to insert your hook to complete the last sl st of the round. You can just pull a piece of contrasting color yarn through the chain to mark it.
