Aida Lacy Shawl, Free Crochet Pattern
I wanted to publish this free pattern for Woman’s Day, but unfortunately, I was unable to log in to my blog and edit it. It took some time for me to figure out why and by then Woman’s Day was already over.
To every lovely woman out there who fights her own battles behind closed doors, juggles a million things and is the epitome of unconditional love, A belated Happy Woman’s Day!
I hope you enjoy working on this free pattern. This would make a perfect project for Spring, lacy and airy! The stitches used are so tall, your shawl grows a mile a minute. I was able to complete it in 2 days flat.
The part I struggled with was taking the pictures. If there is any part I hate about blogging and crochet, it is capturing the items on camera. Some colors and lighting just don’t work in your favor and it makes my blog look less awesome! I hope you see the real beauty behind the crappy pictures of this shawl.
For anyone who has the patience, I bet this shawl would look lovelier in a fingering weight, thinner yarn. Enjoy the pattern.
Crochet Pattern
Materials
- DK weight, size 3 yarn. Cotton preferable.
- Hooks H (5 mm) and F(3.75mm). H hook is used only for the foundation chain.
- Yarn needle to weave in the tail.
Gauge
7 triple crochet stitches alternating with 4 chains = 10 inches long
Finished Measurements
62 inches long and 24 inches wide.
Yardage
Takes around 650 yards.
Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern is in standard American terms.
tr- triple crochet
sl st- slip stitch
ch- chain
sk- skip
st- stitch
Stitch Explanations
Triple crochet (tr): It is a taller than a double crochet and worked as follows:
Wrap the yarn around the hook 2 times, insert your hook into the next st and pull up a loop, *(yarn over and pull through 2 loops) 3 times.——A triple crochet made.
Lacy shell: (tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr) all worked into the same st.
Pattern
With H hook, chain 248. If your gauge is different than mine, you are expected to chain a multiple of 5+8.
Row 1: Switch to F hook. 1 tr in the 13th chain from hook ( 4 chains count as the first triple here and throughout), *(ch 4, skip 4 chains, 1 tr in next), repeat from * till the end. Turn.-———- 49 tr
Row 2: Ch 5, 1 tr in the same st as ch-5, 1 lacy shell ( see stitch explanation above) on top of each of the 47 triple crochet stitches, end with a ( tr, ch 1, tr) on top of beginning ch-4. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 8, 1 tr on top of the middle triple of the next lacy shell, *(Ch 4, 1 tr on top of the middle triple of the next lacy shell), repeat from * a total of 46 times, Ch 4, 1 triple on top of the ch-4. Turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 alternately till you get a total of 24 rows. Fasten off and weave in the end.
Your lovely shawl is ready to wear!

Is the wording for Row 1 correct that you start the triple crochet for row 1 in the 13th chain from the hook? That seems a bit far down the chain to start it. Is it supposed to start at the 4th chain from the hook? Thank you?
No, it is not off. 13 counts for 1 triple + 8 chains.
I love this pattern. Can a blend of Mohair yarn be used? I have always worked with acrylic yarns. I've decided that after 37 years of crocheting it's ti me to branch out. I have just started working with worsted cotton thread. I have 3 projects for myself using #10 cotton thread. I'm a little nervous about making them but I also said to myself it's time. Yes, I think it would come out beautiful. I think the thinner the yarn, the more gorgeous this will turn out.
