Easy Crochet Hat

Do you love textured hats? Then you will absolutely love this crochet pattern using Puff stitches.

Easy Crochet Hat Pattern

The hat is worked bottom-up with decreases at the top to shape the hat. Working top-down didn’t give the same effect as working bottom-up. So I decided to pick this approach and just love the outcome.

Materials

1. Worsted weight yarn ( size 4 medium) for the hat. Lion brand Wool-Ease was used for the gauge. The colors used were Fisherman and Rose Heather.

2. Hook J (6 mm) for the body of the hat and hook I (5.5mm) for the hatband.

Use any size hook to attain gauge.

3. One furry pom pom. I used a 3 ½ inch one for the child and adult sizes. Baby sizes might need a 3-inch pom pom.

4. A one-inch metal button for embellishment (optional).

5. Yarn needle to weave in the tails.

The pattern is in standard American terms.

sc- single crochet

hdc– half double crochet

dc-double crochet

sl st– slip stitch

ch-chain

sk-skip

st-stitch

YO-Yarn over

fsc-foundation single crochet

Stitch Explanation

  1. Foundation Single Crochet (fsc): Helps in working your foundation chain and sc at the same time to create a stretchy band. You can find videos on YouTube on how to make a foundation single crochet. An easy alternative to Fsc has also been given in the pattern.

  2. Puff Stitch: [YO, insert hook into the st or space indicated and pull up a tall loop about the height of a dc st] repeat a total of 4 times, YO and pull through all 9 loops on hook, ch 1 to close the puff st.

  3. Sc2tog: (Insert hook in to the next st and pull up a loop) 2 times, YO and pull through all the 3 loops on hook.

Hat Pattern

Notes

1. Stitch counts for bigger sizes are given in the order 0-3 m (3-6m, 6-12m, Toddler, Child, Adult Small, Adult Large).

2. The hat is worked without turning at the ends.

3. The body of the hat is first worked bottom-up and the hatband is added to the base of the hat with a smaller hook. Due to the nature of the stitch used, making the band first and working the hat onto it left unsightly holes in the band.

4. If you find Fpsc difficult, work option 2 below.

Round 1 (option 1): With J(6mm) Hook, fsc 33( 39, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57), sl st to the first sc without twisting it. You will notice a small gap at the level of the chain. This can be closed while weaving in the tails. ————33( 39, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57)sc

Look for bumps behind your chain

Round 1 (option 2, without Fsc): Ch 33 (39, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57), sl st to first ch, ch 1, 1 sc in back bump of next ch (see pic 1 above), 1 sc in back bump of each ch across, 1 sc in same ch as beginning ch-1, sl st to first sc.——-33 (39, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57) sc

Round 2: Pull up the loop that is already on your hook to the height of a dc, work 2 puff sts into the same st, *(sk next 2 st, 2 puff sts in next st), repeat from * until 2 sts left, sl st to top of first puff st.——–11(13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19) pairs of puff sts

Round 3: Sl st to the gap between the puff sts, pull up the loop on your hook to the height of a dc, work 2 puff sts into the same gap, *(2 puff sts in gap between next 2 puff st), repeat from * until end, sl st to top of first puff st.———-11 (13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19) pairs of puff sts

Repeat Round 3 until your hat is 3 ½ (4, 4, 4, 4, 4 ½, 5) inches tall and work the Next Round below. I got 5 rounds of puff sts in 3 ½ inches, 6 rounds in 4 inches, 7 rounds in 4 ½ inches, and 8 rounds in 5 inches.

Next Round: Repeat Round 3 but do 3 wraps for your puff sts instead of 4 wraps. So you will have 7 loops on your hook before you pull through all of them and not 9. This will reduce the bulk.—–11(13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19) pairs of puff sts

Shaping the Crown of the Hat

Note (for all the sizes): All the puff stitches in the decrease rounds will only have 3 wraps. You will have 7 loops on your hook before you pull through all of them.

Hatband

Notes

1. Gauge for Hat Band: Using I(5.5mm) hook, 13 hdc sts= 4 inches

2. The hatband is worked on to the base of the hat with the smaller hook I(5.5mm). Before you start working the hatband, use the beginning yarn tail to close the small gap in the foundation chain (needed only if you started with a Fsc). Weave in the rest of the tail. The pattern is written to eliminate the seam on your band as far as possible, pay close attention to the beginning and end of Round 1.
