Brown crochet scarf

I named it the Pie Crust Scarf because it looks just like the edge of a pie. The name was suggested by one of my lovely Facebook followers, and I couldn’t be more thankful for it!

Materials

1. Worsted weight yarn. Lion Brand Skein Tones yarn in colors Truffle, Almond, and Ivory was used to make the crochet scarves.

2. An H(5 mm) hook

3. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Finished size

68″ long and 7″ wide. Tassels will add another 6 inches to the length.

Yardage

4 skeins or  720 yards.

Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern is written in US terms.

ch: chain

sk: skip

sl st: slip st

sc: single crochet

hdc: half double crochet

YO– yarn over

fpsc: front post single crochet

WS: wrong side of crochet fabric

Stitch Explanations

1. Sc in the back bump: Insert your hook into the tiny loop under your foundation chain and work your sc.

Back bumps behind the foundation chain

2. Front post single crochet (fpsc): It is worked like a regular sc except for the way you insert your hook. Insert your hook to the back through the gap before the post of the hdc st specified, bring it back to the front through the gap after the post, pull up a loop, YO, and pull through 2 loops to complete a fpsc.

3. sc2tog: It is a decrease worked across 2 sts to join them into one. Pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts, YO, and pull through all the 3 loops on your hook—–sc2tog completed

Gauge

With an H(5 mm) hook, 5 repeats = 4 inches long

Loosely Ch 35. You can chain any multiple of 3+2 to make your scarf wider. If you cannot chain loosely, use the next size hook just for the foundation chain and then switch to a 5mm hook.

Row 1: 1 sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in the back bump of each ch across to end, turn.——–34 sc

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), 2 hdc in the same st as ch 2, *[sk 2 sts, (1 sc, ch 2, 2 hdc) all into the next st], repeat from * until 3 sts left, sk 2 sts, 1 sc in last st, place a marker on this side of the fabric to indicate the WS and turn. ———11 projections or repeats

Row 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in the same st as ch 2, *[sk next hdc, fpsc in next hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc in the adjacent ch-2 space], repeat from * and after 2 hdc in last ch-2 space, sk next 2 hdc, fpsc around beginning ch 2, turn.——– 11 projections or repeats

Repeat Row 3 until your scarf is 68″ long and work the Leveling Row below.

Leveling row: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next ch 2 space, *(1 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next hdc, 1 sc in next ch-2 space) repeat from * until you work a sc in the last ch-2 space, 1 sc in next st, skip next st,  1 sc on top of beginning ch-2, turn. ———32 sts

Last Row: Ch 1, 1 sc in first 6 sts, *(sc2tog across next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 6 sts), repeat from * to end.  Fasten off.———28 sts

Adding Tassels

Note: Attach tassels on the Right side of the scarf. You can choose whichever side you like as your Right side.

I used a small book to make tassels. You can also substitute a thick 5.75-inch-wide cardboard for the book. Wrap the yarn multiple times around the small book or your cardboard. Cut along one side to get many strands of the same length.

Adding tassels to crochet scarf

Take 3 strands, fold at the middle of the strands, and pull through the edge of the crochet scarf to form a loop, grab the ends with your hook, and pull through the loop (see pic above). Now tug gently to tighten the loop.

First, add a tassel in each corner st, then add one in every 3rd st. Repeat on both edges of your scarf.

Finishing

Weave in any tails left along the wrong side of the scarf.
