Tutorial for Crochet Scarf, Easy 2-Row Repeat

Crochet scarf in brown and cream color on fur fabric

Learning how to crochet a scarf is a great first project for aspiring crocheters. A crochet scarf tutorial involves no shaping making it easily achievable.

This delightful textured scarf pattern is fun to create as it is cozy to wear! The only stitch that could be new to beginners is the front post double crochet yet it is the easiest post stitch you could ever learn.

The textured pattern creates a beautiful rhythm of raised stitches that add depth and visual interest to your scarf. The two-row repeat means you’ll quickly memorize the pattern, allowing your hands to work almost automatically as you create a cozy, stylish accessory.

Pattern

Pattern Notes

Sizes Toddler and 4 to 5 Years are grouped together and size 6 to 12 and Teen to Adult are grouped together.

Toddler and 4 to 5 Years

Notes

1. Stitch count for 4 to 5 years is in parenthesis.

2. The scarf will look wider when you have worked only a few rows but will stretch and get narrower under the weight of the fabric.

With brown color yarn, ch 24 (27). Chain any multiple of 3 if you want to adjust the width of your scarf.

Row 1: 1 sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in the back bump of each ch across to end. ——23 (26) sts

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), sk 1 st, 3 dc in next, *(sk next 2 sts, 3 dc in next), repeat from * until you have 2 sts left, sk next st, 1 dc in last st, turn. ——–7 (8) repeats+ 2 dc

Notes

1. In the following rows, the last st is worked into the beginning ch-2 and not the beginning ch-3. This helps keep your edges straight.

2. Row 3 is always worked on the RS of the scarf and Row 4 on the WS.

Row 3: Ch 3, sk next dc, (fpdc, dc, fpdc) in next dc, *[sk next 2 dc, (fpdc, dc, fpdc) in next dc], repeat from * until 2 sts left, sk next st, 1 dc on top of beginning ch-2, turn.——7(8) repeats+ 2 dc

Row 4: Ch 3,  sk the next dc, 3 dc in next, *(sk the next 2 dc, 3 dc in next), repeat from * until 2 sts are left, sk the next st, 1 dc on top of beginning ch-2, turn.——–7(8) repeats+ 2 dc

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have completed 9 (11) rows of dc not counting the first sc row. Do not fasten off. You can count the rows by counting the ch-3 along the left edge of your scarf. Your last row will be a repeat of Row 4.

Joining the Cream Color

Unravel the last dc you made, and restart working your dc as usual, but when you have 2 loops left on your hook, YO the cream color yarn and pull through the 2 loops to complete the dc. You can now cut off the brown yarn.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 with cream color yarn until the total length of the scarf is 35 (48) inches. Do not fasten off.

Joining Back Brown Color

Unravel the last dc you made with cream color yarn and rework it while joining the brown color yarn just like you joined the cream color earlier.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 for a total of 9 (11) rows.

Last Row (for Toddler only): ch 1, 1 sc in first st, *(sc2tog across next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 5 sts), repeat from * 2 more times, 1 sc in last st, fasten off.—–20 sts

Last Row (for 4 to 5 Years only): ch 1, 1 sc in first st, *(sc2tog across next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 4 sts), repeat from * 3 more times, 1 sc in last st, fasten off.—–22 sts

If you think you need more or less sc2tog to adjust the width of the edge, feel free to unravel the last row and redo it. The idea is to get it to the same width as the beginning edge.

Finishing

Weave in any tails left along the WS or back side of the scarf.

Adding Tassels

Note: Attach tassels on the RS of the scarf.

I used a small book to make tassels. You can also substitute a thick 5.75-inch-wide cardboard for the book. Wrap the yarn multiple times around the small book or your cardboard. Cut along one side to get many strands of the same length.

Adding tassels to crochet scarf

Take 3 strands, fold at the middle of the strands, and pull through the edge of the crochet scarf to form a loop, grab the ends with your hook, and pull through the loop (see pic above). Now tug gently to tighten the loop.

First, add a tassel in each corner st, then add one in every 3rd st. Repeat on both edges and your scarf is complete, enjoy!

6 to 12 Years and Teen to Adult

Notes

1. Stitch count and width are the same for both sizes. They differ only in length.

2. The scarf will look wider when you have worked only a few rows but will stretch and get narrower under the weight of the fabric.

With brown color yarn, ch 30. Chain any multiple of 3 if you want to adjust the width of your scarf.

Row 1 : 1 sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in the back bump of each ch across to end. ——29 sts

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), sk 1 st, 3 dc in next, *(sk next 2 sts, 3 dc in next), repeat from * until you have 2 sts left, sk next st, 1 dc in last st, turn. ——–9 repeats+ 2 dc

Notes

1. In the following rows, the last st is worked into the beginning ch-2 and not the beginning ch-3. This helps keep your edges straight.

2. Row 3 is always worked on the RS of the scarf and Row 4 on the WS.

Row 3: Ch 3, sk next dc, (fpdc, dc, fpdc) in next dc, *[sk next 2 dc, (fpdc, dc, fpdc) in next dc], repeat from * until 2 sts left, sk next st, 1 dc on top of beginning ch-2, turn.——9 repeats+ 2 dc

Row 4: Ch 3,  sk the next dc, 3 dc in next, *(sk the next 2 dc, 3 dc in next), repeat from * until 2 sts are left, sk the next st, 1 dc on top of beginning ch-2, turn.——–9 repeats+ 2 dc

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have completed 13 rows of dc for 6 to 12 years and 17 rows for the Teen to Adult Size.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 with cream color yarn until the total length of the scarf is 53 inches for 6 to 12 years and 63 inches for Teen to Adult size. Do not fasten off.

Joining Back the Brown Color

Unravel the last dc you made with cream color yarn and rework it while joining the brown color yarn just like you joined the cream color earlier.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have completed 13 rows of dc for 6 to 12 years and 17 rows for the Teen to Adult Size.

Last Row (for both sizes): ch 1, 1 sc in first st, *(sc2tog across next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 5 sts), repeat from * to end.—–25 sts

If you think you need more or less sc2tog to adjust the width of the edge, feel free to unravel the last row and redo it. The idea is to get it to the same width as the beginning edge.

Finishing
