Stitch Abbreviations

ch: chain

sl st: slip stitch

sc: single crochet

sk: skip

YO: yarn over

Stitch Explanations

SHD(single half double decrease): Insert your hook into the next st and pull up a loop, YO, and pull up a loop in the next st, YO, and pull through all the 4 loops on your hook to complete your SHD. It is like single crochet and a half double crochet stitch joined together.

2. sc2tog: Insert your hook into the first st or space specified and pull up a loop, insert your hook into the next st or space specified and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all the 3 loops on your hook to complete a sc2tog.

3. hdc2tog: YO, insert your hook into the first st and pull up a loop, YO again, insert your hook into the next st and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all the 5 loops on your hook.

4. Working in the Back Loops Only(BLO): Instead of inserting your hook under both the loops of your stitch, you will insert it only under the back loop and leave the front loops free, see the picture below.

Crochet Hat Pattern

Note: Stitch counts for bigger sizes are given in brackets in the order Toddler(Child, Adult Small, Adult Large).

Hatband Ribbing

With a K(6.5mm) hook, chain 6(6, 8, 8).

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across to end, turn.——5 (5, 7, 7)sls sts

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sl in the BLO of the same st as ch 1, 1 sl st in BLO of the remaining 4 (4, 6, 6)sts, turn.——5 (5, 7, 7)sl sts

Repeat Row 2 until the ribbing is approximately 15 (16-1/2, 18, 18-1/2) inches without stretching and you have one extra row after the braid (see pictures below). The ribbing will stretch to fit.

""

Do not stop when you can see a full braid pattern

""

Stop your ribbing when you have 1 extra row after the braid

Joining the Two Sides of the Hatband

""

On the foundation ch side, insert your hook close to the braid while sl stitching the ends of the band together

Note: When inserting your hook into the foundation chain side, insert the hook a little deeper, closer to the first ridge or braid, and not at the very edge (see pic above). This will give a seamless band once you turn it inside out.

Take your hook out of the loop, bring the two shorter ends of the band together making sure the extra row after the braid is visible outside. Insert your hook through the foundation chain side, grab the loop on the other side and start sl stitching through both the layers by inserting your hook through the foundation chain side and the BLO of the last row of sl sts.

Turn your hatband inside out to hide the seam. Pass your skein through the hatband to bring it to the other side. You are now ready to start the crown.

Crown Pattern

Pattern Notes:

1. For the rest of the hat, switch to the bigger 9mm hook.

2. When you work the first round of sc sts into the hatband, work into the valleys between the braids or ridges. The ridges will be too tight to work into. See the pic below to learn where to work your sts for Round 1.

""

Work your first round into the valleys between the braids

3. When working your stitches into the ribbing, insert your hook a 1/4 inch below the edge to avoid leaving holes in your hat.

Row 1: Switch to the 9mm hook.  Ch 1  at the seam and work 32 (34, 36, 38)sc sts evenly distributed around the ribbing, sl st to the first sc, do not turn. If you have extra valleys, you can work sc2tog across two valleys to adjust the stitch count. For example, if you have 40 valleys but need only 38 sts around, work 2 decreases to get your stitch count to 38. ——-32 (34, 36, 38)sc sts

Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), SHD across the same st as ch 1 and next st, *(ch 1, SHD over next 2 sts), repeat from * across to end of the round and after last SHD, ch 1 and sl st to the first SHD, ch 1 and turn.  See Stitch Explanation above to learn how to work an SHD. ——16 (17, 18, 19)SHD around

Note: Make sure you start your SHD in the space specified or your stitch won’t look the same. See the picture below.

Work SHD in the first SHD and next chain space

Row 3: SHD across the st under beginning ch-1 and the next ch space as shown in the picture above, *(ch 1, SHD across the next SHD and the next ch-space), repeat from * all the way to the end of the round and after last SHD, ch1 and sl st to first SHD, ch 1 and turn.——16 (17, 18, 19)SHD around

Repeat Row 3 until your hat is 6.5 (7, 7.75, 7.75)inches tall, and work the decrease rounds below.

Size Toddler and Child Only

Decrease Round 1: hdc2tog across the same st as ch 1 and the next ch-1 space, *(hdc2tog across next st and ch-1 space), repeat from * to end of the round, sl st to the first st, ch 1, and turn.

Decrease Round 2: sc2tog across the same st as ch 1 and the next st, *(sc2tog across next 2 sts), repeat from * to end of the round, sl st to the first st, fasten off with a 12-inch tail.

Jump to finishing the hat below.

Size Adult Small and Adult Large Only

Decrease Round 1: hdc2tog across the same st as ch 1 and the next ch-1 space, *(hdc2tog across next st and ch-1 space), repeat from * to end of the round, sl st to the first st, ch 1, and turn.

Decrease Round 2: hdc2tog across the same st as ch 1 and the next st, *(hdc2tog across next 2 sts), repeat from * to end, sl st to the first st. Fasten off with a 12-inch tail.

Finishing the Hat

1. You will now have a small hole at the top of your hat. Thread the yarn tail at the top through a tapestry needle, turn the hat inside out, go in and out through the sts at the top, pull and cinch the top shut. Knot and securely weave in the remaining tail left.

2. Weave in the beginning tail inside the hat too.

3. Attach the fur pom pom to the top for embellishment.

In the chunky version you have an 8 mm for ribbing but say you use a 6.5 in the pattern. Which one is it? Thanks

You should be using a 6.5mm hook for the ribbing. I just fixed that error in the pattern. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
