hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
sl st: slip stitch
ch: chain
sk: skip
st: stitch
Stitch Explanation
1. Front Post Double Crochet: Worked like a regular double crochet but you don’t insert your hook under a st as usual. Insert your hook from front to back through the space between two double crochet stitches, bring hook back to front through next space between double crochet stitches, yarn over, and complete double crochet as usual. See the blog post here to learn the st: Front Post Double Crochet Tutorial
2. Working into Front Loop or Back Loop: Working into the front or back loop means you insert your hook under only one of the loops of your st as shown below. This will leave a loop free.
3. Reverse Single Crochet: Worked like a regular single crochet but you work from left to right and insert you hook into the stitch on the right before pulling up a loop. You can see a video here or See pic 2 below. If you find reverse single crochet hard, look for its easier alternative, the twisted single crochet on Youtube

Round 2 (see Pic 3 below): Ch 2, 1 fpdc in same st as ch 2 ( the first dc of the previous round), 1 dc in the gap between the fpdc just made and the next dc, *( 1 fpdc in next dc, 1 dc in the gap between the fpdc just made and the next dc), repeat from * a total of 9 (10, 11, 12) until you end with a dc in the gap between fpdc and the beginning ch-2 of previous round, sl st to top of first fpdc. Do not turn.——-10 (11, 12, 13)fpdc alternating with 10 (11, 12, 13)dc

Note: You can measure the diameter of the circle now and compare it with the measurement given under gauge to make sure your hat will turn out the right size. Measure from shell peak to peak as shown in pic 5 below.
Round 7 (see pic 7): Ch 2, *(1 fpdc in fpdc, 5 dc in the gap between the fpdc just made and the next dc, skip the next 5 dc) repeat from * a total of 10 (11, 12, 13) times. Sl st to top of first fpdc. Do not turn.——- 10 (11, 12, 13) fpdc with 50 ( 55, 60, 65) dc

Single Crochet Round in Back Loops: You can fold the reverse single crochet ridge forwards while you work into the back loops. Ch 1, 1 sc in the next back loop behind the reverse single crochet ridge, take care to catch one extra loop behind the back loop to prevent leaving holes in your work, 1 sc in each back loop across, sl st to beginning ch-1.——–60 ( 66, 72, 78) st
Repeat the above 2 rounds until you have 3 ridges for sizes 6-12 months and 1-3 Years, and 4 ridges for bigger sizes. You should end in a reverse sc round. Fasten off.
Visor
Note: For marking the stitches, count the back loops left free if you find it hard to count the reverse sc.
Skip 12 (12, 13, 14) st from point of fasten off, place a marker in next st, skip 33 ( 39, 43, 47) st, and place a second marker. Your visor will be worked between these markers.

Repeat Row 3 until your visor is 1-1/2 (1-3/4, 2-1/4, 2-3/4)” in width from the base of the last reverse single crochet ridge. Fasten off.
Sl st under the reverse sc ridge at the point where the visor starts (see pic 8), work reverse sc along the sides of the visor by sticking your hook into the row ends and making about 3 reverse sc per 4 rows ends. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Fold the visor up on both sides and sew down the corners, as shown in pic 9, taking care that folds on both sides are uniform. Now sew on the buttons. You are done with your gorgeous Audrey Newsboy.
