Easy pocket shawl crochet pattern – Beginner Friendly

Crochet pocket shawls are the rage right now. They will keep you warm and stylish at the same time.

The stitch pattern is a simple 2-row repeat making it a perfect pocket shawl that would catch the fancy of beginner and advanced crocheters alike.

 

 

 

Both the front and back of the stitch has a beautiful texture. You can choose which side you want to make the right side.

This crochet pocket shawl wrap comes in one size to fit all women. You can adjust the width of the shawl and the position of the pockets easily to customize it to your size.

Materials

1. Worsted weight, size 4  yarn. Lion Brand Wool-Ease in color Fisherman was used for the crochet pocket shawl pictured.

2. A J(6mm) crochet hook

3. A tapestry needle to weave in the ends

4. Two 1-1/4 inch wooden buttons for embellishment(optional)

Finished Size

65 inches long and 15 inches wide not including the fringes.

 

You can easily add to the width of the pocket shawl by crocheting more rows. If you would like to make your scarf longer you will have to chain more.

 

Yardage

It took me about 5-1/2 skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease to work this free pocket shawl crochet pattern. Each skein was 197 yards long.

Stitch Abbreviations

ch– chain

sc– single crochet

fpsc– Front post sc

dc- double crochet

sk– skip

 

Gauge

Note: I found that the shawl stretches quite a bit and gets longer when worn. So that has been taken into account while calculating the initial chain.

 

Pattern for Gauge Swatch

Chain 38 and follow the pattern for shawl until your piece measures 4 inches.

5 Repeats= 4 inches

 

Stitch Explanation
Front post single crochet (fpsc): It is worked as a regular sc except for the way you insert your hook. The hook is inserted in the same way as working a front post double crochet. You can check out my tutorial on front post double crochet here: Front Post Double Crochet Tutorial

Pocket Shawl Crochet Pattern

Note: The shawl is made lengthwise. The more chains you add, the longer your shawl will be. The initial chain is a multiple of 4+6.

Row 1: Chain 290, 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook, *(ch 3, sk next 3 chs, 1 sc in next), repeat from * until end of the row, turn.———72 ch-3 loops

Row 2: Ch 2 ( counts as a dc here and throughout), 1 dc in same st as beginning ch-2, sk next ch-3 loop, *(3 dc in next sc, sk next ch-3 loop), repeat from * to last sc, 2 dc in last sc, turn. ———71  3dc group with 2 dc on each end

Row 3: Ch 1 ( does not count as a st), 1 sc in same st as beginning ch 1, *(ch 3, 1 fpsc around the middle dc of the next 3dc group), repeat from * until you work a fpsc in the last 3dc group, ch 3, 1 sc in the last dc, turn.——-72 ch-3 loops

Row 4: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as beginning ch-3, sk next ch-3 loop, *(3 dc in next fpsc, sk next ch-3 loop), repeat from * to last sc, 2 dc in last sc, turn. ———71  3dc groups with 2 dc on each end

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until your crochet pocket shawl is 15 inches wide and you end in Row 4.

Last Row:  Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as beginning ch 1, *(ch 3, 1 sc in the middle dc of the next 3dc group), repeat from * until you work a sc in the last 3dc group, ch 3, 1 sc in the last dc, fasten off. ———72 ch-3 loops

Leveling Rows

These rows will be worked on the Right side of the shawl where you have the ribbed lines. It will make it easy for us to add our tassels.

 

Sl st to the base of the shawl, ch 1 at the corner, 1 sc along the first sc row, work 2 sc across next dc row end,* (1 sc across sc row end, 2 sc across dc row end), repeat from * to next corner and fasten off.

 

Repeat the same on the other edge of the shawl.

 

Pockets for your Shawl (Make 2)

Finished size of pocket: 7-3/4 inches wide and  8-3/4 inches long.

 

Ch 38 and follow the pattern for the shawl until you complete 10 dc rows.

 

Note: Now you will work sc rows around the pocket. While working sc along dc row ends, insert your hook into the leg or post of the dc or turning chain and not into space under them. This is to avoid leaving holes in your pocket.

 

Round 1: Ch 1 at the corner and work along the side of the pocket, 2 sc along the edge of the first dc row, *(1 sc along the side of the sc row, 2 sc along the next dc row), repeat from * until you reach the corner, 3 sc in corner, sk the first ch of the first ch-3 loop, 1 sc in next 2 chs, *(sk next sc, 1 sc in next ch, sk next ch, 1 sc in next ch), repeat from * to end of this foundation chain side,  work 2 more sc in the corner and start working up the right side, *(1 sc along the side of the sc row, 2 sc along the dc row), repeat from * until you reach the top right corner.

Work 1 more sc in the corner and continue to work along the last row, 1 sc in each st across to end of row, turn.

 

Note: The next 2 rows are worked only along the top edge of your pocket.

 

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across to end, turn.

 

Last Row: Pull up the loop on your hook, sl st loosely into next st and each st across to end, sl st in the corner, fasten off with a 2-yard tail for sewing.

 

Attaching the Pockets 

Fold your shawl along its length. Place the base of your pocket 28 inches away from the fold.

 

Use the yarn tail left and sew the pockets onto the shawl. I made a running stitch right inside the single crochet edge. You can use a whip stitch if you prefer.

 

Sew the wooden buttons to the top of the pockets for embellishment.

 

Finishing your Easy Crochet Shawl with Pockets

Tassels will add the final finishing touch to your pocket shawl wrap. Use a cardboard piece that is 3 inches long, wrap yarn around it, and cut on one end to get yarn strands 6 inches long.

 

Take 2 strands, fold at the middle of the strands and pull through your scarf to get a loop, yarn over grabbing all the strands and pull through the loop. Tighten the knot. Repeat the steps to attach tassels in every alternate sc stitch. Trim as needed to level them.
