This crochet poncho free pattern will be a perfect layering piece for summer. Fall will be here soon so why not take advantage of the sunny days left?
I used Lion Brand Cupcake yarn for the pattern but any DK weight yarn will look great too. Try it in a single color and I am sure it will look gorgeous.
The crochet poncho free pattern is a beginner level pattern constructed from two simple rectangles. You make two shawls and join them to make the poncho.
The stitch pattern is very refreshing and is made up of chain stitches. I have never chained so much for one project, lol! To me, it looks like flowers but to my daughter, it looks like triangles. Either way, the stitch is beautiful and perfect for a summer project.

Repeat Rows 2 to 5 until your piece measures 16( 18, 20) inches wide. You should end with a repeat of Row 2 or 4 so that your edges will be straight. Fasten off.
Using your white color yarn, make one more piece following the same pattern.
The dimensions of the 2 finished rectangles are as follows:
S/M: 16 X 28″
L/XL: 18X 32″
2XL/3XL: 20 X 36″
Joining the Pieces of your Crochet Poncho
On the long side of the rectangle made with Cupcake yarn, place a marker 16(18, 20) inches away from the edge. Sew the shorter side of the left piece to this marked part without stretching (Part B above). Now you have an ‘L’ shape. Next, join the top shorter side of the right piece to the long side of the left piece as shown by the red arrow. I used a whip stitch and white color yarn to join the pieces.

HI, This is a very beautiful pattern. I would like to make this for my granddaughter. Can I possibly make this in 6x? How much more yarn would it take?

If you are making it for a kid, it would take you less yarn, right?

I love love love this poncho but the chain 9 loops are not laying flat. Will they start to lay flat and straighten out after the pattern is worked or am I doing something wrong.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful poncho with all. ๐๐คฃ

It should lay flat once you work the next row. The subsequent rows will hold the previous row chain loops in place. I hope that makes sense.
