This crochet sun hat free pattern has a vintage charm. Don’t you think? Tying the scarf around your hat is totally optional.
When I first planned to make this hat, I was thinking of adding wire to the brim. I finished the hat and found that the brim was standing on its own, yay!
I wanted to make a sun hat that looked like a straw hat but I didn’t want to use Jute as it would hurt your hands. Then I found this Jute color yarn from Lily Sugar ‘n Cream online. I was super excited to try it as it looked so much like jute, agree?

Wide Brim for your Crochet Sun Hat
Pattern Notes
1.Switch back to the smaller hook. You want to work your brim with a tight gauge to make it stiff.
2. Round 1 is worked into the sl sts stuck on the surface. Insert your hook only under the 2 loops of the sl st and not into the sc sts behind.
3. The increases on the brim have been staggered to avoid the brim taking a hexagon shape.
Round 1: 2 sc in marked sl st, *(1 sc in next 6 sl sts, 2 sc in next sl st), repeat from * to last 8 sts, 1 sc in last 8 sts, do not sl st and do not turn.————98 sts

Round 4: Repeat Round 2.——–105 sts

Finishing the Sun Hat
1. Weave in any tails left.
2. I tied a thin scarf around the hat, but that is completely optional. I got the scarf from Dollar Tree.

After you form the ring, do you start using the bigger hook?
Shehnaaz

No, the bigger hook is used only for a round of slip stitches right before the brim starts.

I made this and it turned out BEAUTIFULLY! I was concerned because other patterns had called for things such as fishing line, wire, and strange types of yarn that I could not find, but the hat was gorgeous! Pattern worked very nicely. I only got confused at one point and that was because I followed to pattern wrong. The brim even stays out and doesn't fall down!! Thank you!!

Hi Abigail, I was also pleasantly surprised that the brim holds its shape. Glad you enjoyed the pattern.

I am not coming up with 86 SC on round 14. I have tried several times and only come up with 85. What am I doingg wrong?

I checked again and it does add up to 86. Check where you are missing 2sc or just add one extra in a st and continue to the next round.
