Quick crochet blanket finished in peach, cream and blue colors and displayed in a basket

So, what makes this blanket such a quick project? The magic is in the stitch pattern—everything is worked into chain spaces instead of stitches, which helps it grow quicker than you’d expect.

Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern is written in US terms.

st: stitch

ch: chain

sl st: slip stitch

sc: single crochet

sk: skip

dc: double crochet

YO: yarn over

Cl: cluster

Stitch Explanations

Cluster (cl): (YO, insert your hook into the ch or ch-2 space indicated and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops, keep the remaining loops on your hook) 2 times, you will now have 3 loops on your hook, YO and pull through all the 3 loops on your hook to complete your cluster.

sc2tog: Pull up a loop in the next 2 sts, YO, and pull through all 3 loops on your hook to complete a sc2tog.

Pattern for Gauge Swatch

Chain 25 and follow the blanket pattern using just 1 color of yarn. Work until your piece measures 6 inches. Then measure for gauge.

Gauge

Each repeat consists of (cl, ch 2, sc) worked into the same ch-2 space.

4 Repeats = 6-1/4 inches in length.

Pattern Notes

1. For simplicity, we’ll refer to the yarn colors as Cream, Blue, and Peach throughout the pattern.

2. Each stripe is made up of 2 rows.

3. Do not fasten off the cream yarn after each stripe. Instead, carry it loosely along the side of your work. However, for the other two colors, fasten off after each stripe.

4. To join a new color while working your last dc st of a row, start working the dc st as usual, and when you have 2 loops left on your hook, YO and pull through the new color yarn to complete your dc. You can then start working your next row with the new color joined.

With cream color yarn, Ch 70. You can chain any multiple of 3+4 if you would like to make your blanket wider.

Row 1: (cl, ch 2, sc)in 5th ch from hook, * sk next 2 chs, (cl, ch 2, sc)in next ch, repeat from * to last 2 chs, sk next ch, 1 dc in last ch, place a marker on this side of the fabric to indicate the Right Side and turn. (22 repeats + 2dc)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), (cl, ch 2, sc)in each ch-2 space across to end, 1 dc on top of beginning ch-4 while joining the peach color, turn. (22 repeats + 2dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, (cl, ch 2, sc)in each ch-2 space across to end, 1 dc on top of beginning ch-3, turn. (22 repeats + 2dc)

Row 4: Ch 3, (cl, ch 2, sc)in each ch-2 space across to end, 1 dc on top of beginning ch-4 while joining the cream color back, turn. (22 repeats + 2dc)

Repeat Rows 3 and 4, changing colors at the end of every Row 4 repeat. Follow this stripe sequence: Cream, Peach, Cream, Blue, Cream, Peach, Cream, Blue, and so on until you have a total of 23 stripes.

Border

Notes

1. If you made a different number of stripes than shown, be sure to work the border rounds on the Right Side (RS) of the blanket—the side where you placed the marker. You can also identify the RS if the starting tail is at the bottom left corner.

2. Weave in your tails along the back of your blanket before you start the border.

3. When working the border along the left edge, work around the cream yarn carried along the edge to hide it.

4. When working along the left and right edges of the blanket, make sure to insert your hook into the body of the chains or stitches—not into the large spaces you see—otherwise, those gaps will stretch and become even bigger.

Round 1: After finishing your last cream stripe, turn your work and crochet along that final row. Ch 1 at the corner, *(1 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next ch-2 space, 1 sc in next cl), repeat from * until you work a sc on top of last cl, 2 sc on top of beginning ch-3, and continue to work along the left edge of the blanket.

Distribute 4 sc across each stripe to the next corner, 2 sc in the corner. We will now work across the foundation chain side. *(1 sc into the tiny hole under the next cl, 2 sc in next ch-2 space), repeat from * until you work a sc under the last cl, 2 sc in the corner, and continue to work along the right edge of the blanket.

Distribute 4 sc across the first cream stripe, *( distribute 3 sc across next stripe, distribute 4 sc across next stripe), repeat from * to the next corner, 2 sc in the corner, sl st to the first sc. Do not turn.

Note: The left and right edges may look a bit wavy at this point, with the left side being more noticeable. We’ll fix this in the next round by adding some decreases.

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, place a marker in this st, 1 sc in each st to next corner, 2 sc in corner, work along the left edge, 1 sc in next 3 sts, *(sc2tog, 1 sc in next 4 sts), repeat from * to next corner, 2 sc in next corner, 1 sc in each st across to next corner, 2 sc in corner, 1 sc in each st across to last corner, 2 sc in corner, sl st to marked st. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in any tails left along the back of the blanket. Enjoy!
