This design was originally intended just as a messy bun hat but I later added a slouchy hat version to make it timeless.

The hat has a gorgeous button detail on the side which makes it unique. The hat is worked flat and not in the round making it great for beginners.

Continue for Messy Bun Crochet Beanie

The hole for the smaller two sizes will be around 8 ¼- 8 ½ inches and the bigger ones around 8 ½ – 9 inches. So if you measure along the last row of the hat, it will have the same measurements as given above.

Fold the hat with the right side out. You can choose any side as your right one. Working on the right side of your work, seam the sides of the hat with 25(25, 31, 31)sc stitches as evenly distributed as possible, it doesn’t matter if you have a couple of extra stitches, turn.

Shell Row: Ch 1, *(sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, ch 1, sk 2 st, 1 sl st in next, ch 1), repeat from * until you have 4 (4, 5, 5) shells, sl st in the next st, fasten off with a 20-inch tail. Jump to Finishing below.

Continue for Slouchy Hat (All Sizes)

Next Row ( For All Sizes): ch 1( not counted as a st), work sc2tog starting in the same st as beginning ch 1, sc2tog to end, if 1 odd st is left at the end, 1sc in the last st, turn.

Repeat the above row one more time, do not fasten off. Your hat will now look similar to the one in pic 5 above but it will be a tad taller and be more gathered at the top.

Fold the hat with the right side out. You can choose any side as your right one. Working on the right side of your work, seam the sides of the hat with 30(32, 38, 38)sc stitches as evenly distributed as possible.

Shell Row: Ch 1, *(sk next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, ch 1, sk 2 st, 1 sl st in next, ch 1), repeat from * until you have 4 (4, 5, 5) shells, sl st in the remaining stitches to end, fasten off with a 20-inch tail. Turn the hat inside out, thread your yarn tail and go in and out through the top of the hat, pull to gather and sew the hole shut, end with a couple of knots, but do not cut off the excess or weave in the tail yet.

Finishing Crochet Messy Bun Beanie or Slouch

1.
Use the remaining tail to sew down the shells a little to the hat, a couple of points are enough. You should not sew along the edges. Weave in any tails left.

2. Sew on the metal buttons to the shells as an embellishment.
