Materials

1. Cascade 220 Heathers yarn in color Aspen Heather (color 8011). It is a 100% Peruvian Highland Wool worsted weight yarn.

2. An H (5mm) hook.

3. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

4. 1 stitch marker. 

 

 

Finished size

18″ wide and 76″ long after adding the border.

 

 

Yardage

4 skeins of of Cascade 220 Heathers yarn or 880 yards in total. 

 

 

Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern is written in US terms.

ch: chain

st (sts): stitch (stitches)

sc: single crochet

dc: double crochet

dtr: double treble crochet

sl st: slip stitch

sk: skip

YO: yarn over

 

 

Stitch Explanations

dtr (double treble crochet): YO three times, pull up a loop in the next st, (YO, pull through 2 loops) 4 times. 

dtr3tog (double treble three together): It is a decrease worked across 3 alternate sts in this pattern and is worked as follows.

* YO three times, pull up a loop in the first st specified, (YO, pull through 2 loops) 3 times, keep the remaining 2 loops on your hook,  YO three times, sk the next st and pull up a loop in the next st, (YO, pull through 2 loops) 3 times, keep the remaining 3 loops on your hook,  YO three times, sk the next st and pull up a loop in the next st, (YO, pull through 2 loops) 3 times, YO and pull through all the 4 loops on your hook. 

 

 

Gauge

Ch 58 and work Rows 1 to 6 of the shawl, then measure for gauge.

2 repeats= 7-1/2 inches

Crochet Shawl Free Pattern

Ch 254. The initial chain is a Multiple of 14 + 2. If you want to make your shawl longer, you can chain more and each additional 14 chs will add 3-3/4″ to the length of your crochet shawl. 

 

 

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across to end, turn.——253 sc

Row 2: *(Ch 6, sk next st, 1 dtr in next st, (ch 1, sk next st, 1 dtr in next st) 3 times, ch 1, sk next 5 sts, 1 sc in next st), repeat from * to end, turn.——18 pattern repeats

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), * (1 dc in next ch-1 space, 1 dc in next st)4 times, 6 dc in next ch-6 space, * [sk next sc, (1 dc in next ch-1 space, 1 dc in next st)4 times, 6 dc in next ch-6 space], repeat from * to end. You will end with 6 dc in last ch-6 space, turn.——253 sts

Note: Try to work the dtr sts of Row 4 tight. You can do this by wrapping the yarn tight around your hook when you work your dtr. 

 

Row 4: Ch 5, sk next st, dtr3tog across alternate sts (see stitch explanation), ch 6, sk next st, 1 sc in next, *[ch 1, sk next 5 sts, dtr in next st, (ch 1, sk next st, dtr in next st)3 times, ch 6, sk next st, 1 sc in next], repeat from * until 5 sts & the beg ch is left, (ch 1, dtr, ch 1, dtr) on top of beginning ch, ch 1, 1dtr in the space before beginning ch, turn.———17 repeats + 1 half repeat on each end

Repeat Rows 3 to 6 until you have completed 25 rows including the first sc row. Your last row will be a repeat of Row 5. Do not turn. Pivot to work border along the row edges on the left.

Note: I added a hanging disc border to this shawl. If this is not your style, you can work fringes, tassels or a twisted fringe in place of your 3rd row.

7. Border with hanging discs

 

Row 1: Ch 1 at the corner and distribute 71 sc sts to the next corner, and turn. To do this, you can divide the side into 4 equal parts using stitch markers and work, 17, 18, 18 and 18 sts in each section to get a total of 71 sts. If you made a wider shawl, take care to keep the stitch count at the end of this row a multiple of 8 minus 1. ——71 sts

 

 

Row 2: Ch 4 ( counts as a dc+ ch 1), sk next st, 1 dc in next st, *(ch 1, sk next st, 1 dc in next st), repeat from * to end, turn.——36 dc

 

 

Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next ch-1 space, *(ch 12, place a marker in the 5th ch from bottom of the chain, now sl st to the 7th ch from your hook to form a ch ring, (1 sc, 1 hdc, 12 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc)in the ch ring, sl st to first sc in the ring, sl st to the marked ch, sl st to the next ch, ch 3, sk the next ch-1 space, 1 sc in next ch-1 space**, (1 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next ch-1 space) twice, repeat from * ending last repeat at **,  1 sc in 3rd ch of beginning ch, fasten off. 

 

 

Now sl st to the right edge corner and work the same 3 rows as above. The first row should be worked on the Right Side of the fabric (pretty side where your worked you last row).
