Stitch Explanation
1. V-st: (1hdc, ch1, 1hdc) into the same st.

2. Working into Back Loops of a Stitch: Work into back loops means instead of inserting your hook under both the loops, insert it only under the back loop.

Note: Variations in stitch counts are given in the order Child(Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium/Large)

Ribbed Band
Row 1: Ch 9 (10,12)1sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn.——–8 (9, 11) sc

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in back loop of same st, 1 sc in each ch across, turn.———-8 (9, 11) sc

Keep repeating Row 2 until your band measures 16 (17, 18) inches

The Body of the Hat

Note
1. Beginning ch 1 or 2 counts as a sc and hdc respectively.

2. The hat is worked flat on to the brim and the sides are seamed to add the button closure.

Row 1 ( right side): This row is worked along the length of the ribbed band. Ch 1 at the corner and work 60( 63, 69)sc stitches along the length of the band. To evenly distribute the stitches, eyeball or divide the band into 4 equal parts using markers. Then work a quarter of your stitches into each quarter. For example, for a total of 60, work 15 stitches along one quarter of your band, turn. ——– 61( 64, 70)sc

Row 2: Ch 2, *(sk 2 st, 3 hdc in next), repeat from * until you have 3 sts left, sk next 2 st, 1 hdc in last, turn.——– 19 (20, 22) groups of 3 hdc

Row 3: Ch 2, sk next st, V-st into the middle hdc of the next hdc group, *(skip 2 st, V-st into middle hdc), repeat from * till 2 st left, sk 1 st, 1 hdc in top of beginning ch-2, turn.——19(20, 22)V-st

Row 4: Ch 2, 3 hdc in next V-st and each V-st across, 1 hdc in last st.——19 (20, 22) groups of 3 hdc

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until your work measures 5.5(6, 7) inches tall including the ribbed band.

Decreasing/Shaping

Decrease Row 1 ( If you ended in a 3hdc group row): Ch 2, sk next st, 2 hdc into the middle hdc of the next hdc group, *(skip 2 st, 2hd into middle hdc), repeat from * till 2 st left, sk 1 st, 1 hdc in top of beginning ch-2, turn.——19(20, 22) groups of 2hdc

Decrease Row 1 ( If you ended in a V-st row): Ch 2, sk next st, 2 hdc into the next V-st, *(skip 2 st, 2hd into next V-st), repeat from * till 2 st left, sk 1 st, 1 hdc in top of beginning ch-2, turn.——19(20, 22) groups of 2hdc

Row 2 : Ch 2, sk next st, 2 hdc into gap between next 2 hdc, *(skip 2 st, 2hd into gap between next 2 hdc), repeat from * till 2 st left, sk 1 st, 1 hdc in top of beginning ch-2, turn.——19(20, 22) groups of 2hdc

Row 3: Ch 2, sk next st, 1 hdc into gap between next 2 hdc, *(skip 2 st, 1hd into gap between next 2 hdc), repeat from * till 2 st left, sk 1 st, 1 hdc in top of beginning ch-2, turn.——19(20, 22) hdc

Row 4 : Ch 2, 1 hdc in each hdc across. ——19(20, 22) hdc

Row 5 : Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Do not fasten off. —–19(20, 22) sc

Now your hat will look as shown in the pic above.

Fold the hat and working on the right side of your work, seam the sides of the hat with 25(25, 31) sc stitches, turn.

Shell Row: Ch 1 ( counts as first sc), *(sk 2 st, 5 dc in next, sk 2 st, 1 sc in next), repeat from * until you end with a sc in the last st. Fasten off.———–4 (4, 5) shells

Finishing
1. Weave in any tails left.

2. Sew on the metal buttons to the shells running along the side of your hat

I wonder if you could tell me the width of the band on the messy bun hat. I am trying this pattern out for a friend. Making a medium/large using the same hook size with worsted yarn but in Caron Soft and the band comes out to be over 2 inches wide. That seems too wide too me, but I could be wrong. Should I go to a smaller hook or just use less chain to start for a narrower band. I see you gauge for HDC but not for the bad of SC. Thanks for your help. Beautiful pattern.

The band is between 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 inches wide. Hope that helps.
