The Cozy Wool yarn that I used for these hats has unfortunately been discontinued. You can make it with any other chunky yarn. Lionbrand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick and Big Twist Natural Blend are great alternatives.

One of my Facebook followers suggested the name Heartwood Beanie because the stitch looks like growth rings on a tree, how apt! So grab that chunky yarn in your stash, and let’s get started!

Stitch Abbreviations

ch: chain

sl st: slip stitch

sc: single crochet

BLO: Back loop only (see stitch explanation below)

sk: skip

Stitch Explanations

1. Sc in the Back Loops Only(BLO): Instead of inserting your hook under both the loops of your stitch, you will insert it only under the back loop and leave the front loop free, see the picture below.

Insert hook under back loop only of the stitch

2. sc2tog: It is a decrease worked across 2 sts to join them into one. Pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts, YO, and pull through all the 3 loops on your hook—–sc2tog completed

Gauge

Once you finish the ribbing and work a few rounds of the top of the hat with an L (8mm) hook, check the width to see if it is 17-1/2 (18, 19, 19-1/2)” in circumference. If not, switch to a bigger hook.

Note: Stitch counts for bigger sizes are given in brackets in the order Toddler (Child, Adult Small, Adult Large).

 Ribbing

Note: The hat is worked bottom up and we will start with the ribbing.

With a K (6.5mm) hook, chain 7 (7, 8, 8).

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across to end, turn.—–6 (6, 7, 7)sl sts

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sl in the BLO of the same st as ch 1, 1 sl st in BLO of the remaining 5 (5, 6, 6)sts, turn.——6 (6, 7, 7)sl sts

Repeat Row 2 until the ribbing is approximately 15-1/2(17, 18-1/2, 19) inches without stretching and you have one extra row after the braid (see pictures below). The ribbing will stretch to fit.

Joining the Ribbing into a Circle

""

On the foundation ch side, insert your hook 1/4 inch below the edge while sl stitching the ends of the band together

Note: When inserting your hook into the foundation chain side, insert the hook a little deeper, 1/4-inch below, and not at the very edge (see pic above). This will give a seamless band once you turn it inside out.

Take your hook out of the loop, and bring the two shorter ends of the band together making sure the extra row after the braid is visible outside.   Insert your hook through the foundation chain side, grab the loop on the other side, and start sl stitching through both the layers by inserting your hook through the foundation chain side and the BLO of the last row of sl sts.  Turn your hatband inside out to hide the seam. Pass your skein through the hatband to bring it to the other side if needed.

Sides and Crown

Pattern Notes

1. Switch to the 8mm hook for the rest of the hat.

2. When you work the first round of sc sts into the ribbing, insert your hook into the valleys between the braids or ridges. The ridges will be too tight and hard to stick your hook into. See pic below to learn where to work your sts for Round 1.

""

3. While working Round 1, also take care to insert your hook NOT at the very edge but a little lower to avoid leaving holes in your hat.

Round 1: With the 8mm hook, ch 1  at the seam and work 46 (50, 52, 54)sc sts evenly distributed around the ribbing. You can add a few increases or decreases into the valleys to adjust the stitch count if the number of valleys is more or less than your total stitch count.  Do not sl st and do not turn.——-46 (50, 52, 54)sc sts

Round 2: 1 sc in the BLO of the next st (first st of Round 1), place a marker in the sc you just made, ch 1, sk next st, *(1 sc in BLO of next st, ch 1, sk next st) repeat from * to end. You will end with a ch 1 on top of the last st right before the marked st, do not sl st, and do not turn.—-23 (25, 26, 27) sc+ 23 (25, 26, 27)chs

Round 3: 1 sc in BLO of the next marked st, move the marker up into the st you just made, ch 1, sk next ch, *(1 sc in BLO of next st, ch 1, sk next ch) repeat from * to end. You will end with a ch 1 on top of the last ch right before the marked st, do not sl st, and do not turn.—-23 (25, 26, 27) sc+ 23 (25, 26, 27)chs

Repeat Row 3 until your hat is   5-3/4 (6-1/4, 7, 7)” tall.

Decrease Rounds

Pattern Note

1. We will now add decreases to shape the crown.

2. The marked st indicates the first st of a round, so to count the total number of sts and chs at the end of a round, count from the marked st to the last ch-1 or last sc of the round.

Cinching the Hat (All Sizes)

1. Thread the tail left at the top through the tapestry needle, go in and out through the top edge of the hat, pull, and cinch the hat shut. Make a knot and securely weave in the remaining tail inside the hat.

Finishing the Knit Look Crochet Hat

1. Weave in any other tails left. While weaving in the beginning tail, use it to close any gaps in the ribbing before you start weaving it in.

2. Attach the fur pom-pom to the top to add a final finishing touch to your crochet knit-look hat pattern. If your pom-pom has a loop, you can sew a button inside your hat and then pull the loop over the button to keep it in place.
