Bunny Hat Crochet Pattern

Share the Love!

Try this adorable bunny crochet hat pattern for Easter or as a baby shower gift. They will make great photo props too.

Finished bunny hat crochet pattern in 4 colors

The pattern is based on my popular Crochet Teddy Baby Hat. I kept the basic ha pattern the same and changed up the ears. If you have already made that hat, this is going to be a breeze.

Finished crochet bunny hat free pattern in boy colors

You can make it for baby boys or girls. For girls, I have also included the option to add some cute flowers to the bunny ears.

Which version do you prefer, the one with or without flowers? I will be able to decide what looks best only when seeing it on a baby. Can’t wait to make a matching blanket and gift this crochet bunny hat to someone.

What else can I make for a matching gift set for a baby? Any and all ideas are welcome.

Stitch Abbreviations

ch– chain

sc– single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

dc- double crochet

BLO– back loop only

Gauge

Gauge is calculated by measuring the diameter of the crown part. First, work the first 3 rounds of the Newborn Crochet Hat and then measure the diameter. Use any size hook to attain gauge.

The diameter of the circle after 3 Rounds= 4-1/2 inches

Stitch Explanations

Back Loop Only(BLO): Work in the BLO(Back Loop only) means you will insert your hook only under the back loop of a stitch and not both the loops as usual.  See the diagram below. This will leave a free loop on your work.

1. Insert hook under the back loops only

Pattern Notes

1. First round is ideally worked with a magic ring but I have also included an option to work the round without a magic ring for those who find it difficult to make a magic ring.

2. If you opted for the magic ring, take special care to weave in the beginning tail securely going back and forth at least 3 times. You don’t want your magic ring to fall apart and ruin your hat.

3. If you opted to work the first round without a magic ring and you find that there is a hole on the top, use the beginning tail to close any holes left on the crown before weaving it in.

4. The hat is worked without turning at the end of the rounds.

5. First 3 Rounds are common for all sizes. After working on those proceed to Round 4 for the size you are making.

5. An invisible join is used to finish the last round of the hat. You can see a video here:

Crochet Pattern (All sizes)

Round 1(with magic ring): Make a magic ring and work 8 sc into it, close the ring, do not sl st and do not turn.——–8 sc

""

2. For Round 1 without a magic ring work around the chain as shown

Round 1(without a magic ring): Ch 3, 2 sc into 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc into next ch, you will now end up below your foundation chain, 2 sc into the next free loop of the foundation chain, do not sl st and do not turn. See pic 2 above. ——–8 sc

Round 2: 2 sc in next st (the first st of Round 1), place a marker in the first st you just made, 2 sc in next 7 sts until you end in the st right before the marked one, do not sl st and do not turn.——16 sc

Round 3: 1 sc in next marked st, move the marker up into the first st you just made, 2 sc in next *(1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next), repeat from * until you end in the st right before the marked one, do not sl st and do not turn.———24 sc

Jump to the size you are making for Round 4 and onwards.

Newborn Bunny Hat Crochet Pattern

Round 4: 1 sc in next marked st, move the marker up into the st you just made, 1 sc in each st across until you end in the st right before the marked one, do not sl st and do not turn.———24 sc

Repeat Round 4 three more times until your hat is 4-1/2 inches tall. Do not fasten off yet.  Fold your hat flat. I found that it lays flat in some directions more than the others. This is especially true if you did not start with a magic ring. Experiment to find the best fold, so it becomes easy to attach the ears.

""

3. Work sc sts until you reach the side of the hat and sl st to the side.

Once you fold the hat, most likely your marker won’t be on the side fold. So, take out the marker and continue working sc sts until you reach near the side of the hat. It might take you one or more stitches depending on how you folded it and the size you are making.

Last Round: Sl st loosely into the next st on the side fold, place a marker in this sl st, ch 1, 1 sc in BLO of the next st, 1 sc in the BLO of each st across until you reach the marked sl st, sc into the BLO of the marked sl st, cut yarn and pull the tail through, sk the next ch and make an invisible join into the next st.—-24 sc

Bunny Ears Crochet Pattern (make 2)

4. Finished bunny ears

Using the 8mm hook, leave a 1/2 yard tail and ch 5, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place a marker in the sc you just made, 1 sc in next 2 chs, 4 sc in last ch, pivot to work along the free loops of the foundation chain, 1 sc in next 3 loops, 3 sc into the top two horizontal loops (this will be the beginning ch), 2 sc in the BLO of the next marked st, sl st in BLO of next 5 sts until you reach the base of the ear, fasten off with a 1/2 yard tail. You will use both tails to attach the ears to the hat.

Gently tug the ear to straighten it out.

Attaching the Ears

You will use a tapestry needle to attach the ears to the hat. Pinch the bottom 1/2 inch of the ear and sew it in place with one of the tails left. Repeat for the other ear.

Place both ears on the hat to determine their position. I placed the ears on the 3rd round from the top and slightly slanted.

Use the yarn tail on the left to sew from left to right and use the yarn tail on the right to sew from right to left. Rather than working along just the surface of your hat, run your needle in and out of the hat for a more sturdy attachment.

Flower Pattern

With the 3.5mm hook, leave a 8-inch tail and ch 16, 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and next 7 sts, 2 dc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next, 1 sc in last st. Fasten off with a long tail. Rolls the flower into shape keeping the 16 hdc part in the center, tuck the end a little under the flower and sew below the flower to hold its shape. Run the yarn tail under the flower to make sure the two tails emerge on either side of the flower.

Attaching the Flowers to the Hat

Use a tapestry needle and pull the two tails on the base of the flower into the hat at least 3/4 inch away from each other. Use the tails to sew the flower along its base going back and forth. Use both tails to do this and in the end make sure the tails emerge at the same point, knot to secure and trim.

Attach 2 more flowers in the same way taking care to see that they are huddled close together.

Round 4: 1 sc in next marked st, move the marker up into the st you just made, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in next, 1 sc in each st across until you end in the st right before the marked one, do not sl st and do not turn.——-26 sc

Repeat Round 5 three more times until your hat is 5 inches long. Do not fasten off yet.  Fold your hat flat. When I tried to fold the hat with the marker on the side, it wouldn’t lay flat. Experiment to find the best fold, so it becomes easy to attach your ears later.

Very cute! I'm thinking a bunny tail diaper cover to match the bunny hat crochet pattern would make a really cute set.

That is a great idea. I am also thinking of making teething rings with crochet bunny ears.
