Crochet Cowl Pattern, Sea Shells Cowl
I know some of you prefer crochet cowls over crochet scarves. When I published the Rose Petals scarf using this same st, some of you requested a cowl. So here it is!
Since I had already used this stitch in a couple of other patterns, writing this cowl pattern came really easy. Keeping in mind that some of you might be seeing this stitch for the first time, I have made a conscious effort not to omit the details.
I love adding colors to all my projects as it makes the photographs pop. I have used two colors here but I think the cowl would look just as good in a single color as well.
I started writing this pattern before I left for vacation and originally planned to publish it on Jan 3rd. I got so busy with my niece’s wedding that things didn’t go as planned. Hey, family first, right?
I cannot reiterate enough how much I love this stitch. I plan to design a free poncho pattern with this stitch next. What type of poncho would you like? A turtle neck or a cowl neck? Assymmetrical or triangular? Let me know in the comments below.

Crochet Cowl Pattern
Materials
1. Worsted weight size 4 yarn. Lionbrand Wool-Ease in colors Fisherman and Pumpkin were used for the sample cowl.
2. An H(5mm) hook.
3. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.
Finished Size
The finished cowl is 35 inches in circumference and 13 1/2 inches high.
Gauge
Gauge is 7 Pat repeats= 8 inches
Yardage
Around 220 yards of each color.
Stitch Abbreviations
ch-chain
dc-double crochet
fpdc-front post double crochet
beg- beginning
Stitch Explanations
V st: (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) worked into the same st.
Shell St: (3 dc, ch 2, 3dc) worked into the same ch-2 space.

Crochet Pattern
The initial chain is a multiple of 4. It is crucial that you make the initial chain loose. Feel free to use a larger hook just for the foundation chain if needed.
Row 1: With color Pumpkin, loosely ch 124, sl st to first ch, ch 5 ( counts as 1dc + ch 2), 1 dc in the same st (first V-st made), *( sk 3 chs, 1 V-st in next ch), repeat from * until 3 chs left, sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn.—–31 V-sts
Row 2: Sl st into the next ch-2 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc)into the same ch-2 space to complete the first shell, 1 fpdc in the next dc (the second leg of the V-st), *(1 fpdc in the next dc, shell in the next ch-2 space, 1 fpdc in the next dc), repeat from * until you work a shell and fpdc in the last V-st, 1 fpdc in the first leg of the very first V-st, sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn.———31 shells
Note: In the next row, you will be skipping a lot of stitches to work your V-sts and that is what makes your shell stitches pop to give it a 3D look.
Row 3: Sl st loosely into the next 2 dc, sl st into the next ch-2 space, ch 5, 1 dc in same st( 1 V-st made), 1 V-st in ch-2 space of each shell across to end, sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn.——-31 V-sts
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 6 shell rows and fasten off.
Starting the Second Color
Row 1: With the new color, sl st into the ch-2 space of any shell, ch 5, 1 dc in the same ch-2 space( 1 V-st made), 1 V-st in ch-2 space of each shell across to end, sl st to beg ch-3, do not turn.——-31 V-sts
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 of the first color until you have 5 shell rows.
Last Row: Sl st into the next 2 dc, sl st into the next ch-2 space, *(Ch 5, sl st into the ch-2 space of the next shell), repeat from * until you end with a sl st in the same ch-2 space where you started the first ch-5. Fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in any tails left.

This is a beautiful pattern. I’d love to do a poncho in this same stitch. Would prefer a triangle poncho without a cowl or turtlenecek.

I’m partial to turtleneck. I was wondering if you thought about designing it so the sides formed sleeves or cuffs. I’ve seen lots of ponchos that are made that way these days and think they look so dressy and practical. Your pattern stitch would make it beautiful as well!

I’m really confused. After I have made the first row of V stitches and done the last three slip stitches, you say not to turn but to slip stitch to the next chain two stitch. Do I attach to the end of the row making it a circle?
You are supposed to make the foundation chain and then join the ends form a circle. It looks like you missed that step.
Thanks for responding so quickly. I have looked all over my directions and didn’t see anything that mentioned forming a ring but I figured it out myself. Anyway, I love the stitch but once again am having a problem. Am I correct in that in the V-stitch I FPDC the first DC, 3 DCs, ch 2, 3DCs in the ch 2 sp,, then FPDC in the second DC of the V stitch? It just isn’t curling tightly like in your diagram. I have gone over the directions multiple times and can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Looking forward to your tutorial so I can surprise my daughter with the beautiful cowl.
It says in Row 1, ch 124 and sl st to the first ch. Your shells will pop up when you do the next V-st row. You will be skipping a lot of stitches between those V-sts that will make your shell stitches pop.
Ok. I’m going to rip it out and start again. However, I have to warn you, you may have to come to my house and straighten me out if it doesn’t work. How does visiting Florida sound? LOL
I don’t know where my head has been (in the sand??)but this is my first time seeing this stitch and I am in LOVE!! I could only dream of how beautiful an asymmetrical poncho with a cowl would look. I bet it would be fun-nominal!! Please keep up the wonderful work!!
