Materials

1. Friends Cotton 8/8 100% Cotton from Hobbii in color Beige (05). It is marked DK (size 3) but is closer to a worsted-weight yarn (size 4) in thickness. 

2.  H (5mm) and I (5.5mm) hooks

3. Locking stitch markers

4. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

 

 

Finished Size

Finished bag is 11-1/2 inches wide and 13 inches tall without the handle. 

 

 

Yardage

3-1/2 skeins of Hobbi Friends 8/8 cotton yarn or 300 yards of a yarn of similar gauge.

Produce Bag Crochet Pattern

With the bigger hook, ch 42.

 

Round 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place a marker in this st, 1 sc in next 39 chs, 3 sc in last ch, pivot to work along the free loops of the foundation chain, 1 sc in each free loop until 1 loop is left, taking care to go under the junction of 2 loops to avoid leaving holes, 2 sc in last loop, do not sl st and do not turn.—84 sc

 

 

Round 2: 1 sc in next marked st, move the marker up, 1 sc in each remaining st to end. Your last st will be in the st right before the marked one. 

 

 

Round 3 and 4: Repeat Round 2 above. End Round 4 with a sl st in the marked st, do not turn. 

 

 

Lacy Body of the Market Bag

Round 5: Switch to H (5mm) hook. Ch 1 (not counted as a st here and throughout), 1 sc in same st as ch 1, *(ch 3, sk 3, 1 sc in next, ch 3, sk 1, 1 sc in next), repeat from * and after last ch 3, sl st to first sc. Do not turn.———-28 ch-3 loops

 

 

Round 6: Sl st to next ch-3 space, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in the same ch-3 space, *(ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-3 space, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-3 space), repeat from * and after working 1 sc in last ch-3 space, ch 2, sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Do not turn.

 

 

Round 7: Ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-2 space, ch 3, 1 sc in next ch-2 space, *(ch 3, 1 sc in next ch 2 space, ch 3, 1 sc in next ch-2 space), repeat from * and after you work a sc in the last ch-2 space, sl st directly to first ch of the beginning ch-4 loop of the round. Do not turn.

 

 

Repeat Rounds 6 and 7 until your bag measures approximately 12″ tall from the base and you end in a repeat of Row 6. Then work the round below.

 

 

Round 29: Ch 1 (does not counst as a st here), 1 sc in next 2 dc, mark the first st of this round, *(2 sc in ch-2 space, sk next sc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, sk next dc, 1 sc in next 2 dc), repeat from * and after 2 sc in the last ch-2 space, do not sl st or turn.—— 84 sts

 

 

Round 30: 1 sc in marked st and each st across to end, do not sl st pr turn. (84 sts)

 

 

Bag Handle

Mark 15 sts in the front middle of the previous row. Mark the back of the bag symmetrically for the second handle, too (see orange markers in pic above). 

 

 

Round 31: 1 sc in next marked st and each st across to next marked st, ch 25 for handle, sk 15 marked sts, sc in next st and each st to next marked st, ch 25 for handle, sk 15 marked sts, sc in next st and each st to end of round, do not sl st or turn.

 

 

In the next row, when you reach the chain for the handle, you work sc into the chains.

 

 

Round 32: 1 sc in marked st and each st and ch across to end, do not sl st or turn.

 

 

Round 33 and 34: 1 sc in marked st and each st across to end, do not sl st or turn.

 

 

Last round: Sl st in marked st and each st across to end. Finish with an invisible join. 

 

 

Finishing

1. Make a round of sl st around the opening for the bag handle. 

2. Weave in any tails left inside the bag.
