Ch 24. You can chain any even number to start.

Row 1: Sc2tog across 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, *(sc2tog in same st and next st), repeat from * to end, turn.——21 repeats.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog in same st as beginning ch-1 and next st, *(sc2tog in same st and next st), repeat from * until just the beginning ch-1 is left, sc2tog in same st and beginning ch-1, turn.———-21 repeats.

Repeat Row 2 until you get a square. Do not fasten off.

Border with Hanging Loop

Ch 18 at the corner, take out the loop on your hook, insert your hook through the last st you worked, grab and pull through the last loop of the long chain without twisting it, sl st up each chain on the chain loop, and continue working a border around the dishcloth as mentioned below.

For the border, continue with the working yarn and distribute sc sts along the side of the dishcloth. I worked 1 sc for each row end. When your reach the next corner, work 2 sc right before the corner and 2 sc right after the corner, on the foundation chain side, work 1 sc into each free loop of the foundation chain until you hit the next corner.

At the corner, work 2 sc right before the corner and 2 sc right after the corner, distribute sc sts along the next side of the dishcloth, work 2 sc right before the corner and 2 sc right after the corner, continue to work sc sts tightly into each of the sts of the last row until you hit the hanging loop, sl st to the point between the 2 legs of the loop, and fasten off with a 1/2 yard tail.

Wrap the tail around the base of the loop 5 times, then weave in the tail securely. Weave in any other tails left. Your dishcloth is ready!

Thank you for providing clear and detailed instructions and for explaining how to do the sc2tog stitch. I'm a long-time knitter but trying to learn more crochet stitches.
