Stitch Abbreviations
ch: chain
st: stitch
sl st: slip stitch
hdc: half double crochet
Stitch Explanation
back bumps: They are the tiny bumps or loops you find behind each of your foundation chains as shown in the picture below.
fphdc (front post half double crochet) and bphdc (back post half double crochet): See a tutorial for front post and back post double crochet on my blog here: Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet Tutorial.
A fphdc and bphdc is worked by inserting the hook in the same way as the fpdc or bpdc in the above tutorial, you just have to replace the dc with a hdc st.
fpsc (front post single crochet): Worked like a fpdc in the above tutorial but in place of a dc st, you work a sc st around the post.
V-st: (hdc, ch 1, hdc) all worked into the same ch-1 space.
Reverse single crochet (crab stitch): Instead of pulling up a loop in the stitch to your left, pull up a loop in the stitch to your right and complete a sc. You can search YouTube for ‘crab stitch’ to learn how to work this stitch.
Gauge
4 shell repeats = 4-1/2 inches

Pattern Notes
While working your hdc sts, don’t pull through all the 3 loops at once if that makes your stitches tight. Instead, first pull through 2 loops and then through the last loop. This will ensure that your st stays loose.
Round 1: Switch to the bigger H(5mm) hook. Ch 1(does not count as a st), 1 sc in first st and each st across to end, sl st to first sc. Do not turn.——-88 sts
Note: From now on, you will turn at the end of every round unless otherwise specified.
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc), 1 more hdc in same st, ch 1, 2 hdc in next st, *(sk 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, ch 1, 2 hdc in next st), repeat from * until 2 sts are left, sl st to top of beginning ch-2, turn. ——22 repeats
Round 3: Sl st into next st, fpsc in next st, ch 1 ( fpsc+ch 1 counts as a fphdc), V-st in next ch-1 space, 1 fphdc in next hdc, *(sk next 2 hdc, 1 fphdc in next hdc, V-st in next ch-1 space, 1 fphdc in next hdc), repeat from * until 2 sts are left, sl st to beginning ch-1, turn.——-22 repeats
Repeat Round 3 until your cowl is 6″ tall, and turn and work the leveling round.
Leveling Round: 1 sc in the same st you worked your last sl st, 1 sc in next st, sk the next ch, 1 sc in next 2 sts, *(sc in next 2 sts, sk next ch, 1 sc in next 2 sts), repeat from * to end, sl st to the first sc, do not turn. ——–88 sts
Last Round: Ch 1 and work reverse single crochet in the st to the right and each st across to end, sl st in the last st you just worked, fasten off.
