This size 4 yarn crochet pattern hat tutorial is another version of my popular 1 hour Jenna beanie. I hope this helps folks who have been asking me how to change stitch counts to suit a size 4 yarn.
The hat is worked bottom up starting with the ribbing. Decreases are added at the top to shape the crown and cinch the hat.
An optional fur pom pom is added as the final finishing touch. You can buy one from the store or make your fur pom poms using fur fabric.

Toddler (Child)
Note: Stitch counts are given in the order Toddler (Child)
Ribbing
With the H(5mm) hook, ch 9 (9).
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across to end, turn.——–8 (8) sc
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 sc in BLO of the first st, 1 sc in the BLO of next 6 sts, 1 sc in the last st (going under both the loops like a regular sc), turn.——8 (8) sc
Repeat Row 2 until your ribbing is 15-1/2 (17) inches without stretching. Do not fasten off.
Joining the Ends of the Ribbing
Bring the beginning of your ribbing near the last row where your hook and the working yarn are. Sl st both ends together going under both loops of the stitches on the last row and the free loops on the foundation chain side.

Notes
1. While working the Base Sc Round 1, insert your hook NOT at the very edge but a little lower to avoid leaving holes in your hat.
2. To distribute sc sts evenly in Base Sc Round, you can use 4 markers to divide the ribbing into 4 quarters and then distribute 13, 13, 13, and 14 sts in each quarter for size Toddler and 14, 14, 14, and 15 sts in each quarter for size Child to get a total of 51 (57) sts.
Base Sc Round: Ch 1 at the seam and distribute 51 (57) sc sts around the ribbing, sl st to the first sc, do not turn. ——-51 (57) sc
Round 1: Switch to the bigger J(6mm) hook. Ch 2 (counts as a dc), (1 dc, ch 2, 1 sc ) all into the same st as beginning ch-2, *(sk 2 sts, 2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in next st), repeat from * until 2 sts are left, sl st to top of beginning ch-2, turn.——-17 (19) pattern repeats
Round 2: Pull up the loop on your hook just a tad, WITHOUT making a turning chain, directly work (2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc)in the next ch-2 space and each ch-2 space across to end, sl st to the first dc, turn. ——-17 (19) pattern repeats
Repeat Round 2 five (six) more times until your hat is 5-1/2 (6-1/2)” tall measured from the bottom of the ribbing. You will now have a total of 7 (8) rounds of pattern repeats.
Shaping the Crown
Note
1. We will now add decrease rounds to shrink the hat at the crown and finally cinch it shut.
2. You will place a marker in the first stitch of each of the following rounds. This will help you know where your round ends.
Decrease Round 1: Pull up the loop on your hook just a tad, WITHOUT making a turning chain, directly work (2 dc, ch 1, 1 sc)in the next ch-2 space and each ch-2 space across to end, sl st to the first dc, turn. ——-17 (19) pattern repeats
Decrease Round 2: Repeat Round 1
Decrease Round 3: Pull up the loop on your hook just a tad, WITHOUT making a turning chain, directly work (1 dc, 1 sc)in the next ch-1 space and each ch-1 space across to end, sl st to the first dc, turn. —— 34 (38) sts
Decrease Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as a dc), 1 dc in next st, *(dc2tog across next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 2 sts), repeat from * to end, sl st to beginning ch-2, DO NOT TURN. ——-25 (28) sts
Decrease Round 5: Ch 1, *(1 sc in next st, sc2tog across next 2 sts), repeat from * to end, sl st to first sc, fasten off with a 1/2 yard tail for cinching.
Finishing
1. Turn the beanie inside out. Thread the tail at the top through the tapestry needle, go in and out through every 3rd st at the top of the crochet hat, pull, and cinch the hat shut. Make a couple of knots and securely weave in the remaining tail.
2. Weave in the beginning tail along the inside of the ribbing. While doing this, remember to close any gap in the ribbing.
3. Sew a button inside the hat for anchoring your pom pom if you want to make it detachable. Now turn the hat right side and use a bigger hook to pull the elastic loop on the pom pom over the button inside. You can twist and go over the button one more time if your pom pom dangles. You can also sew the pom pom directly onto the hat using a needle and thread. Enjoy!
Teen/Adult Small (Adult Medium or Large)
